Weekly Contest #373
They arrived at his parent’s home late in the evening. Holden opened the wide, tall oaken front door with only a slight push and entered the vacuous entry hall holding the woman’s hand their fingers laced together, as he brought her inside. She was silent, still in awe at the size of the estate house and definitely taken aback by the extent of her new boyfriends’ affluence. When he said he wanted to bring her home, she expected none of this based on his current bohemian lifestyle. As the door closed softly behind her, surprisingly quiet desp...
Weekly Contest #324
Mavey looked forward to Saturdays in the summer. It was the day that the trio; Mavey, her older sister Grace and the oldest sister Elisabeth, would venture down to the edge of the south field and towards the pond at the border of their farm. It wasn’t a true pond as there was a tributary on the north end that allowed water from the river to ‘chill’ before exiting the at south end of the retention area and into a narrower river. The exit river was more active as it was being pushed by the water from the pond. It was like watching a stampede o...
Weekly Contest #287
“So, we are meeting another one?” Steve said. He waved down the waiter working over by the bar with a quick hand after securing a table at the café’s outdoor patio. While he pulled the chair away from the table for his wife to sit down, he continued. “What it this Amelia, number three this year?” She settled in the chair nicely, overturning the set coffee cup on the table, and pulling the napkin away to settle it on her lap. She was in her late fifties dressed in nice slacks, a loose-fitting white shirt and diamond stub earrings, perfect for...
Weekly Contest #246
Reaching the interchange on the interstate, she pulled off at the exit then loosely held the steering wheel as the car rolled into a filling station at the end of the ramp. She didn’t pull into the pumps, but instead pulled along the curb behind the station by the trash dumpsters. She silently sat there in the car, the engine running smoothly patiently waiting for instructions on what to do next. She reached into her purse which had been thrown haphazardly at the foot of the passenger seat. She had grabbed it by its resting spot by the door,...
Weekly Contest #221
I like the new family. There are two little boys just like me. One of them is small, he can just barely crawl and the other is just a little older and taller. He is just the opposite of his brother and is constantly running. He ignores me, but I like him just the same. I watch them as they play with the plastic blocks in my room – or with his soldiers. A lot has changed in my room since I last slept here. There are new beds and the shelves are different and there are a lot of toys here, some I’ve never seen before. The toys I had were woode...
Weekly Contest #190
This was going to be hard. He had dreaded this ever since his mom had died a month ago, but the house was going up for sale and everything had to be cleared out. He faced the storage closet in the basement, juggling the key in his hand. The door seemed to threaten him with its battleship gray paint and its menacing presence. There were deep claw-like scratches for numerous moves, and hinges rusted to a deep brown and it presented an aura of foreboding, something he felt even as an adult. He didn't know why he was afraid, there was nothing i...
Weekly Contest #163
At first the dare seemed simple. It was a cake walk. On a hot summer day on his grandfather’s farm, David and three other boys: Pete his cousin, and two younger boys, nine and six, from the farm down the road, were rolling in the grass, enjoying the hot summer weather and the soft breezes coming over the bean fields, when the allure of the decrepit chicken coop at the corner of the farmstead presented a challenge. It was a lazy dare by Pete, almost an afterthought. But being the tester of limits, the magi of misdirection, he was always up to...
Weekly Contest #155
Under the nurse’s guidance, Marty walked into the cold exam room and shuffled over to the examining table. Awkwardly pulling up on the legs of his jeans to get comfortable, he pulled out his shirt tails to give him more room, his feet dangling in the air like a school boy’s. He sat quietly with his hands folded in his lap while the nurse, after reassuring him the doctor would be in soon, closed the door, leaving him there alone. This was the consult he feared. The one after all the tests and questions and probing. The one he was dreading ove...
Weekly Contest #151
In my youth, we seldom saw my father’s side of the family. When I was old enough, I would ask about them: where they lived, what they did, if there were any pictures of them. His response was they were farmers and had a small plot far out in the country. He was an architect, which seemed somewhat at odds with the history he presented, but it sated my curiosity and as I grew older, I began to envision acres of corn and a yard full of tractors and seeders and plows. Chickens and cows and livestock in abundance and feral cats that had assumed t...
Weekly Contest #149
In a small rural town, nobody can hide. Everyone knows everyone and, in addition, each other’s proclivities and oddities. The town that Edgar Gibbon grew up in wasn’t any different. He attended the same small elementary school in the center of the town where for decades, everyone in the town had. Once he completed that, he then entered the middle school that included additional students from the smaller outer towns that didn’t have a student population to support a junior high school of their own. That was when Edgar met Jimmy Zimmerman. On ...
Weekly Contest #143
The Plant That Never Gave Up Out of curiosity Cecilia walked into the garden shop and trolled around. The air inside was remarkably cooler than the stifling outdoor summer heat and she felt refreshed as she walked among the ferns and the palms touching their surfaces and just enjoying the textures. Reaching a shelf of very angular straight leafed plants she hesitated and stared at them. She had never really seen these before and she found the clustered sharp tipped plants very intriguing. The leaves were a sharp green with a yellow outline ...
Weekly Contest #141
Salvador sat at his desk and stared at the open newspaper in front of him. He sat there quietly in the small cluttered office at the back of the restaurant. With his arms in his lap, hands folded together, he tried to comprehend the article in front of him. ‘How was this possible?’ he asked himself. ‘Where did this come from? Who did this?’ were his last thoughts as he looked up from the review and gazed at the pictures adorning the yellowing wallpaper that surrounded him as if looking for some guidance. Looking down from their posts were t...
