Multiverse Mike and Killer Kyle Unplugged

Weekly Contest #184

“I can live without electricity,” I said. “Yeah, Mike, me too.” Kyle sighed. Licking his lips, he cast his eyes over the posters that cover the wall of our flat. Wonder Woman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Amy Pond from Doctor Who and Florence Pugh as Black Widow stared down at us. Even though the electricity lines had been fine after the alien invasion, fires had crippled the whole city since. “Yesterday’s pizza?” I asked, needing something to do. “Sounds good.” Kyle rubbed his hands together. “Damn it’s cold without the heating on. Hopeful...

Lights Out, Knights Rout

Weekly Contest #184

Hear ye, hear ye; swearing, violence, battle and death follow, and some nudity if that helps? Sir Danielle Longbow had her hands one hand on Lupita Smith’s cheek, the other groping the witch’s backside. The knight’s teeth nibbled playfully at her lover’s ear as they writhed on their four poster bed. The contrast of Danielle’s snow white skin against Lupita’s was stark in the orange firelight. The muscles of the knight’s arms were matched only by the witch’s thighs. Both were muscular but Lupita had left her youth of swinging a hammer at he...

Killer Kyle and Multiverse Mike

Weekly Contest #184

Parental Warning: contains mention of public urination, gore, violence, drugs, and frequent pop/geek culture references. Ever feel like the walls are closing in? I definitely had a bed when I went to sleep. Next thing I know, I was lying on the cold, hard and sticky ground. There were some magazines there that I think have been out of publication for years. It was cool getting to know Kerrang's hottest artists of 2014 all over again, but I missed my bed. Then there’s my flatmate. Don’t get me wrong, the photos on the wall are a testament to ...

Love's Labors Cast Aside

Weekly Contest #184

Formula: infidelity, swearing, heartbreak, singular mention of suicidal thoughts. “This is the last time,” she told him. His lips left her neck. The lust inside him was dampened by curiosity. “The last time?” he asked. “I can’t keep lying to my husband. I’ve handed in my notice at work already. I’m moving away. This will be the last time you see me.” She drew the covers up around herself as armour. “Say something.” Every assumption he’d made about their relationship imploded. He’d built his happiness on their stolen moments. He wilted, a...

A Clone in Need is a Son in Deed?

Weekly Contest #183

Contains traces of: swearing, daddy issues, singular use of the word mangosteen. Detective Arthas Jacques of Mars’ Off World Crime Division raised his hands to surrender to Earth’s police officers. His droid did likewise, having to hold what was left of one hand in the other. The stub of its other black arm rose to show it wasn’t hiding anything. “Well, mate. Looks like you’ve been busy,” said the lead officer dressed for war as he entered a room full of spent bullet casings. “Lie down on the ground for me, hands behind your head. Cheers p...

The Dungeon of Deus ex Sapiens

Weekly Contest #183

Secret ingredients(don't tell anyone): Guns, swearing, gore. Bullets pounded the wall where Arthas had been. He blind fired from what little cover the lift offered as the doors threatened to close. “Is it too late to surrender?” Detective Jacques asked. He was a long way from Mars. Of all the ways the Martian had imagined dying, being turned into Swiss cheese by assault rifles had to be one of the worst. “Far too late, Mister Jacques,” said the taunting voice of Lord Banks. The aristocratic puppet master spoke through the public address sys...

Sirens Blaring, Bullets Flying, Droids Dying

Weekly Contest #182

Contains traces of: Swearing and Violence. Ingest at your own discretion. Sirens blared. Bullets whistled through the air. Detective Arthas Jacques of Mars’ Off World Crime Department whistled Always Look on the Bright Side of Life to soothe himself. PTSD beckoned, but the warm hand of Monty Python’s Brian was pulling him the other way. “Going to join in at any point?” asked Agent Belle Nguyen as she shot at the enemy and ducked back behind cover. “At least let him get to the chorus,” said the scratched black droid by Arthas’ side. An eye g...

The Agent, the Detective, and the Split Personality Droid

Weekly Contest #182

TW: Guns, swearing and misogyny. “The next demonstration is in twenty four hours,” said Agent Belle Nguyen. “Where?” Detective Arthas Jacques asked, looking away from the waves below the train. “It’s from an internal memo. They have my communicator, but they don’t know what the message says. They’re guessing the timing based on previous messages. If I was there I would know what the message says. That’s not in the memo though.” She ground her pearly teeth in frustration, thrusting a rogue hair behind her ear as if shoving a stranger out of ...

Martians on a Drowned Earth

Weekly Contest #181

TW: Swearing Agent Belle Nguyen stared down the gun in the Spectrum droid’s hand unblinking. “Purple, really? Going to shoot me? Someone force feed you shit mood soup?” Her voice was a mix of posh English and French. “What are you doing aboard my ship?” Detective Arthas Jacques asked, holding up his metal prosthetic hand towards the droid to keep it from acting on deadly impulses. “Waiting for you,” she said. “Put the gun away, Purple.” Arthas threw off his coat and fanned his shirt beneath. Sweat from running all day had soaked his clot...

Flip for Infidelity

Weekly Contest #180

TW: Sex. “We could hurt a lot of people. People we love,” she said. “How about we leave it up to the coin?” She reached into the pocket of her jeans and pulled out a shiny silver coin. His eyes lingered on her body. “What do you think? Heads, this is the end. Tails, we keep going?” He didn’t want to hurt anyone, but he didn’t want to stop either. As much as he loved his wife, there had been nothing between them in bed for a long time. At first he had tried to conjure up the old sparks. Every rejection hurt more than the one before. Eventuall...

Escapee on Mars

Weekly Contest #179

TW: Swearing. Detective Arthas Jacques’ swipes moved images from the network to his visual explanation of Marvel’s character, Vision. “He was created by Tony Stark, who is Iron Man,” said the grown man with the tangible excitement of a toddler who’s heard the ice cream truck. “Why are they hand drawn when you showed me video?” asked Agent Belle Nguyen of the Mars Security Agency. “They’re from the comics, the video you saw was from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He typed in the air. Words appeared amongst the holographic mess of his eclecti...

A Kiss in the Void

Weekly Contest #179

Detective Arthas Jacques reached for his pistol. Agent Belle Nguyen was dead and he’d just watched it, among a crowd of scoundrels. Blood poured out of her heart onto the stage. She’d died for show, a demonstration. He would have revenge. “Please. Everyone. Calm down,” said the host. Instead of being there in person the scientist behind Deus ex Sapiens was using a virtual presence device to hide his identity. The droid was a sparkling decedance that put even Arthas’ Spectrum droid to shame. “Though Miss Nguyen is quite dead for now, I can as...

It Ends With a Broken Heart

Weekly Contest #178

TW: Self harm and stabbing. “Sign the confidentiality agreement here.” The agent pointed a long finger to a highlighted line. “Date it here,” said the man whose eyebrows were trying to compensate for his thinning hair. Arthas Jacques’ finger slid across the screen, leaving a scrawl that few would recognise as his name. “You know of course that you can’t tell anyone about our investigation,” said Agent Jones of the Martian Security Agency. “Yes. I understand.” His Martian capital accent was the typical mix of French and Arabic. “I can’t tell...

Sun’s Gone, Guns Drawn

With guns aimed at him, Detective Arthas Jacques kept his hands raised. “Cain Ableman, for threatening an officer of the Martian Police Force’s Offworld Crime Department, you are under arrest.” The detective’s blue eyes met with Agent Belle Nguyen’s brown ones as she stood by his side. Cain grinned, finger on his trigger. The lesser thugs of the Bullet Donors mercenary band had six bloodthirsty smiles as they stood shoulder to shoulder. “Do I have the right to remain violent?” Ableman asked. His blue and white uniform strained to restrain ...

Deus ex Sapiens

Weekly Contest #177

TW: Guns, slavery and droids. “Time for the truth, Arthas. I’m not who you think I am,” said Mayko Belle with her private school English and French blended accent. Detective Arthas Jacques’ blue eyes widened. “No? Who are you then?” “My name is Bella Nguyen. I’m an agent for the MSA.” Tucking one of her poker straight black hairs behind her ear she fixed him with a steely gaze. Laughing, he turned his head away from her and nodded. “Right. Of course. Trust me to fall for a beautiful woman who wants something else. Go on then, tell me what t...
