❣️You Are Invited to My Pity Party❣️

Weekly Contest #342

Roses are Red. Violets are Blue Niki, Darlin’, my love is true. I read about this serial cheating celebrity husband. That’s a tongue twister. This fella reportedly gave his soon-to-be ex-wife 10,000 heart-shaped balloons for Valentine’s Day. Although 10,000 balloons is clearly an exaggerated number, the video shows he did give her a boatload, making for quite a video. Someone joked in his comments that he gave her one balloon for every day he cheated. I laughed so hard, I folded in half. That’s a lot of cheating. Speaking of cheating, ...

Clout Chasin'

Weekly Contest #340

Sister’s on speed dial, preachin’ ’bout my ways, Callin’ ’em “porch dudes” cause we have a lil' foreplay But I skip the apps, yeah, I skip the bars, Caught a whole husband right under these stars. My sister finds my dating habits infuriating. "Please stop dating porch dudes," she’ll say, as if it's a sickness. "Porch dudes" is her scornful label for men who slow down and flirt when they see me. I don’t do dating apps, skip the bars. My method is simple. I sit on this porch on a rush-hour-clogged street; men slow down to flirt; I flirt ba...

Ribs, Rumors, and Rusty

Weekly Contest #339

Ribs, Rumors, and Rusty On a cold winter day, I shook hands with the devil. He smiled real nice… Grandpappy used to say, never let the devil ride— ’cause he’ll end up wanting to drive. Rusty shuffled into Tom and Kate’s Coffeehouse in Karorkkte, Ohio, carrying the cold in with him. A worn brown leather jacket hung from his shoulders. His brown skin was deeply creased. It was impossible to pin his age—sixty, seventy, eighty. He peeled off his skullcap. Gray hair lay stubbornly flattened beneath it, as if winter itself had pressed it down ...

The End of Mary Lou Hatton’s Big Beautiful Women Book Club

Weekly Contest #338

MARY LOU HATTON My thick thighs announce themselves as I climb the old stairs. Each step groans under me. A loud pounding echo bounces through the library’s high-ceilinged halls, long before I reach the top stair. If that weren’t enough, my slip-in gym shoes contributed their own rubbery chorus. Thump. Squeak. Thump. Squeak. Squeak. At the top, I lean on the wall, out of breath. My glasses slide down my sweaty nose. I whispered a husky prayer: Please don’t let me need to be resuscitated in front of the book club. I was gassy; little poo...

Porchlight Hunger

Weekly Contest #337

CW: Abusive behaviour, sexual content I love sitting on my porch, listening to the boards rock beneath. Every sound reminds me of how many times pleasure has found me here. I’ve met boyfriends, one-night stands, one husband, and one man I needed a restraining order from on this porch. Tonight, I’m hoping for someone decent enough to leave quietly. I smirk, thinking of the men, their stamina, and wild appetites. My sister’s warning swims in my head: stop dating what she calls porch dudes. It’s a loaded warning. This was our childhood home...

Pretty People Murder

Weekly Contest #336

The detective called me. When? Just now. Just now or a while ago? Five minutes ago. Did he interview you or just call? He called. Wants me to come downtown. Says he needs to interview me about the case. What case? You know what case. Who is this? I’m the one whose car you hopped into. I took you to the police station. I was running for my life. Thanks for saving me. You were running for your life in a blood-soaked dress with a bag full of money. Is that what you thought was in the bag? They said the victim was missing a large sum of cash. ...
