Flower’s Tongue

Weekly Contest #376

Daisy = protection My father drew a masterful picture of a house covered in all sorts of flowers when I was little. He framed it and hung it in the common room of the house. “Is it a real place?” I had asked him with big eyes. “Yes,” he answered simply. “Who lives there?” I asked unable to peel my eyes away from the artwork. “A flower keeper and her younger sister used to live there,” he answered with a soft smile but sad eyes. “Used to?” I asked surprised that anyone would want to leave such a place. “They live in heaven now,” he answered ...

Typical Treatment

Weekly Contest #355

It’s busier than usual tonight. The event room is booked out by a wedding party and the diner is packed. Madi has five tables, which is overwhelming but worth the money. The crew of waitstaff includes her, Johnny, Alex (for the event room), and Liam; but with customers and hosts, it feels like an overfilled moving bus. Madi doesn’t mind though, less room to ruminate. Madi’s long near-black hair is slicked into a braid on the top of her head with wispy pieces left out to frame her face. If you look closely the back of her neck is red from the...

Matching Set

Weekly Contest #298

Everyone talks about their best friend, that one person who’s always been in their life through break-ups, moving, and changing college majors. That one person who, when life feels too heavy, they can always call to laugh with or cry with. I love the idea of having a platonic soulmate who wants nothing from you but your companionship. I love watching chick-flicks about “bffs” or reading coming-of-age books about close-knit friend groups who have known each other since pre-school. I guess I’ve always had a fascination with things I’ve never e...

The Gift of a Blank Book

Weekly Contest #284

3/25 Dear diary, that’s what you’re supposed to say right? I’ve never done this before. My therapist Danny gave me this notebook and told me I should start keeping a diary, I said that a diary is something a 13-year-old girl uses to write about her crush, and he said I can call it a journal if that makes me feel better. So here I am… I don’t have much to say at the moment, life’s good, I honestly don’t even know why I’m in therapy. Bye, I guess… I don’t know how to end one of these. 3/26 Hi, me again. Danny also suggested I write every day, ...

Home for the Holidays

Weekly Contest #283

“I’m telling Mom you’re not helping!” She shouted as she stomped her foot down and rolled her eyes dramatically. “Why do you have to act like such a little brat!’ I yelled back. “I’m not a brat!” “Well then stop acting like one and just make the damn cookies!” “I wish you never came back home!” She screamed as she stormed off. “I wanna watch The Grinch.” She protested. “We watched The Grinch last year, can’t we watch Home Alone or something?” I suggested. “You don’t get to choose the movie just because you’re older!” “I never said I did, I ...

A Dream of Darkness

Weekly Contest #282

Some Days it’s hard to tell if I am awake, that I’m not still in a dream of darkness where I walk and talk the same but I feel that fuzzy little feeling. I’m completely in the moment, not thinking about the past or future, just listening to the now go by. In awakened reality it’s not so fuzzy and magical, it’s loud, stressed, and dark. I know I am awake because I can feel the weight of today on my chest, which is especially bad today. After all, today is a big one. I push the covers back, it’s warm today. I head to the kitchen, which is con...
