Weekly Contest #360
“Get goin’ sheila; up the hill Laura, hurry,” Jody yelled. She looked back into the darkness and could hear ear curling shrieks in the distance. Laura clawed into the muddy hillside, slinging one arm after another; jumping hard as her fatigued legs could muster. Jody turned back to the darkness, her jade eyes dancing back and forward between the tree line. “LAURA,” Jody yelled. “I’M TRYING JO—” Laura fell from the hill landing on her back. She inhaled deeply. Jody rushed over and stood her to her feet. The shrieks intensified; sending tremor...
Weekly Contest #351
February 29, 1996 “You’re doing good, Dynasty. Push,” John said holding his wife’s clammy hand. The nurse wiped her face with a rag as she hyperventilated; telling her to slow her breathing. Dynasty's lower lip quivered; decorated with an array of cracks resembling the Sahara's crust. “I-I…c-can't,” Dynasty whispered. “It's–ARGH!” “You almost there babe,”—John released his wife’s hand and walked to the foot of the bed— “The baby…oh my gahd.” When John looked down, his golden eyes rolled into the back of his head and he collapsed to the ...
Weekly Contest #337
The stack of papers shook the cubicle as they collided with the desk. The impact sent tremors through Chance's forehead, causing him to recoil in the roller chair. Chance pulled down at his face; rubbing the oils on his shirt as he sucked his teeth and squinted at the computer screen. He turned to Darrel; forearm resting on the cubicle wall with a wide grin plastered between his ears. “Wh-what’s this?” Chance asked. He flipped through the stack of papers with his thumb. “It’s ten minutes before my shift ends.” “Yeah, about that. I need this ...
Weekly Contest #334
Once upon a time, there was an old man…no, that’s not right. Once upon a time there was a young man…or was it a teenager? Could it have been a child? I just can’t seem to recall. How’s this? Once upon a time, there was a being, a special being I might add. What made this being so special? He traveled the world near and far. He wasn’t a hero; slaying beasts and saving fair maidens. He didn’t travel sharing good news, nor did he spread the gospel. He wasn’t even in a band. No, this being traveled the world with a ladder, thirty feet or so, ...
Weekly Contest #332
As the sliding doors parted, the smell of tobacco raced up Janae's nose. A smell she'd become all too familiar with anytime bad news parted a physician’s lips. The acrid aroma led her to her brother, Malcolm; sitting hunched over on the curb, cradling his knees to his chest. Janae hesitantly, but gently rested her hand on his wide canvas of a back before joining him. When he passed the cigarette to her, she flicked the smoldering ember into the distance, causing him to release a sigh of nicotine. “Last thing you should be doing, Malcolm,”...
Weekly Contest #274
“Hey”-Jada touched the TSA's wrist-“be careful with that,” she said. The man raised his hands in the air and gently sat the camera down. “What’s with all the…cameras?” He asked. “You two photographers…or sum’?” “Making the world a better place,” Daren said. The TSA gave the two of them a questionable glare. Jada let out a labored sigh. “We're part of the Predator Catching Task Force(P.C.T.F.). We go around”-Jada waved her hand over the tripods and cameras of various sizes-“with this, and we catch and expose child predators across the country...
Weekly Contest #269
1 Corinthians 15:42-44. So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable, it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; and it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. Caskets, they come in different colors, shapes…and sizes. There isn’t one that’s a cut above the other; they all serve the same purpose, to house our loved ones in the ground, never to be unear...
Weekly Contest #252
Rachel paced the hundred square-foot room; the soles of her feet blistered as the weeping floor boards sent her neighbors into a frenzy. With every bang on the wall, Rachel would shield her head. She removed the sweat weighed shirt and sat on the edge of the creaking bunk bed. Rachel gripped the sheets until her nails pierced her palms. Deep breaths. What is she doing? She’s practicing. Practicing? For what? It’s what she learned in the meeting you idiots. Ah, is it working? Of course not! She craves it! We crave it! WE NEED IT! Rachel stood...
Weekly Contest #241
The second hand raced around the clock, as one crisp page turned after the other. Able intertwined his fingers as his thumbs chased after the other, his eyes frolicked around the room, and his leg bounced on the opposite side of the desk. Caine glanced up from the papers. “S-sorry.” Able said. Caine reclined in the roller chair and let out a deep caffeinated sigh before plopping the papers on his desk. “Well, sir?” Able asked. Caine removed his glasses and rested his hand on his temple. “You’re improving kid, but…” “Yeah?” “It’s mediocre, la...
