Together Until The End

Weekly Contest #378

They look so pathetic. So scared. Hard to believe I loved them once. Feared them last. Now they are afraid of me. Very afraid. It feels so good to be the one causing them to shake. "We buried you." Even their voices cannot stand still, tremulous, thin. They might as well be the ghost. "I dug that grave. So why shouldn't I be able to dig myself out?" And that's the part that still hurts, somewhere in my exposed marrow, my rotting insides, my absent soul. Somewhere, somehow, I still feel betrayed by that. But unfortunately for them, I feel...

Please Don't Cry over the Crisp Bowl

Weekly Contest #355

Reverend Brown has always preferred the wake to the funeral. Maybe this isn’t exactly an unusual preference; to be sure, the young Castle brood are galloping about in glee at the bountiful feast bowing the plastic tables creaking along the wall, and Ma Durrell is pleased as punch the whole dreary affair is over so that the music can get started; but Reverend Brown is the vicar after all, the holy women. Surely she should cherish the chance to conduct the final celebration of a life; the opportunity to honour a life and give it over to the Lo...

The Necessity of Blood

Weekly Contest #352

You must not bleed. You learn this first of all. Before love, before knowledge, before faith. You must not bleed. To bruise is unideal but sometimes a blow must be dealt and a weed will flower in return. Though a bruise can be concealed. In fact a bruise may even, kindly, turn to black or grey. It’s the yellow tinge, the purple spots you have to watch out for. But a bruise will not stain. It will not bloom and grow and sink into all you own. It does not demand attention. Blood always calls for it. All eyes turn to the arrival. It can begin a...

Lunchtime

“Did you hear?” Lana swings a leg over the table, slinging her corduroy bag under the bench, “there’s a beast.” She sits, rubbing at her lime green bandana as she pulls out her lunch. “Running about town.” When she begins to gnaw at her sandwich, I am reminded of a koi fish, the image exacerbated by her fluorescent orange jacket, and the lily pad coloured headgear. “Thought you were going to say the party was off or something.” I study my own sandwich, counting the seeds in the bread. The vinegar in the BBQ sauce stings my nose in a deliciou...

It All Falls Down

Weekly Contest #331

By the time the snow stops falling, no one will ever talk to Marley Alfred again. But for now, she will watch as the sky weeps ice dust and the children dance in the cold ash. And she will smile. All plans for the winter Thursday were off as soon as it became clear that a blizzard was coming. Who can focus on arithmetic and copying out documents when the world is turning soft and white and new? There is something about the arrival of new snow that resets everything. Nothing is real during snow fall. The clocks still strike upon the hour but...

Employee Incident Report Transcript: n (n+4)=24r+22r+1-3

Weekly Contest #328

CW: Psychological horror, disturbing imagery It wasn’t always this way. Or was it. Funny the way it all just. Apologies. I shouldn’t. I don’t even. I forget… What was that? Anyway. As I was saying, we try our best here, to create a workplace environment that is. Well. Like another home. So that when you clock in every day, you feel as though you are coming back to family. Work is always better when you have a great team around you, don’t you think? Sorry. I probably shouldn’t be asking you questions. What was your’s again? My mind is all ov...
