Learning the Ropes

Weekly Contest #294

A simple misunderstanding brought us together on a warm Friday afternoon in September. My roommate, Alex, and I were kicking a ball around on a plush grassy area in the city park across the street from our dorm. Alex sent me a bouncing pass that I returned with a looping ball over his head. He turned his back to me, took two quick steps, jumped and executed a perfect bicycle kick to shoot the ball back over his head at me. I was impressed and surprised. The ball came back quickly, to my left. I kept my eye on it. I wanted to catch it befor...

Saturday Car Shopping

Weekly Contest #280

“Good morning, Jack. Get in and close the door. Let’s get going.” “Good morning, Phil. Things okay today? Thanks for driving.” “Everything’s good. Could use more sleep, though.” “Me too. Definitely. I thought you got up early every day with those two young kids. Don’t you?” “Hold on. Got to pay attention to the traffic. Ok, clear now. Off we go! How do I get to the highway? I forgot to set up the GPS app on my phone.” “Follow this road about two blocks into the park. Then take a left at the first traffic light. Then leave the park and g...

The Last Half

Weekly Contest #235

Wake up at 5:30 AM. Downstairs to the kitchen. Coffee. Water. Wolf down a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for fuel. Back upstairs to the bathroom, once my body decides it wants to leave yesterday behind. Some days it takes a second cup of coffee. Take a shower. I feel better, more awake. I also want to be nice to the others in my pace group. I run hot, and generate a lot of sweat. Don’t want to start out smelling like a wet dog. Put on running clothes set out the night before. Grab a bag with extra clothes. A spring half-marathon means ...

Finding Serenity

Weekly Contest #184

I jumped into the driver’s seat and slammed the door closed. I put on my seatbelt and turned on the headlights. I had left the engine running because the battery in my old car was going bad. I pulled the cell phone out of my jacket pocket and unlocked the screen. I started up the navigation app and typed in my cousin Steve’s address. When I realized the situation, I looked at my passenger in the front seat and said, “Houston, we have a problem.” The app had responded with the dreaded word OFFLINE. We were both panting after running back to...

Back Up

Weekly Contest #181

“Man, whose idea … was this? My feet are … burning. I’m tired. It’s 105 degrees. No clouds. We’re climbing this, … what? Mountain?” “Easy, Ray. Easy. Stop. … Catch your breath,” said Karl. Gasping for air, Ray went on, “We’re lugging … gallon jugs of water, and I am … losing … traction. … Loose rocks on … the … trail. This is nuts. Not … prepared for … this. Almost fell … a couple … of times already.” Karl had been following close behind. The two of them had been going up fast. He slowed down when he saw that Ray had stopped. Karl walke...

Just Another Guy

Weekly Contest #165

“Want to come up?”, Renee asked as David parked his Toyota Prius in front of her apartment building. It had been their third date. Dinner and the ballet. They had a great time. David gripped the steering wheel and stared straight ahead. After a moment, he answered. “Maybe next time. I’ll call you next week”. “Okay”, she said. “Good night.” She walked out of the car, through the building’s double glass door, and looked back, feeling confused as David drove away. What had gone wrong? David met Renee playing co-ed volleyball in a Pittsburgh...
