Cats Gonna Cat

Weekly Contest #372

The first thing Emma noticed when she arrived at the employee entrance to Breezy’s Pet Store was that it was open. Her heart began to race. Did the closers forget to lock up last night? Did someone burglarize the place? Was it even safe to enter? Against her better judgement, Emma walked inside. Perhaps she should call 911 first? If there was nothing there, she’d look foolish and her employers would probably get mad. She needed this job. It didn’t pay much, just enough to cover the bills, but in this economy, she valued stability. As she ...

Provo Alone

Weekly Contest #371

Dad pulled into the rest stop, somewhere around Provo, Utah. From my perch in the nook above the driver’s seat in Grandpa Joe’s motor home, I’d been watching the road. Keeping track of where we are. Mom, Dad, and my brother got out and went to the bathrooms. I better get out too. I always had a small bladder. Mom once even took me to the doctor about it, although nothing came from it. I still have to go to the bathroom a lot. Better not chance it. I get out of the motor home and stretch, looking at the mountains. There are fewer trees her...

The Great Power, Wealth, and Responsibility of Time

Weekly Contest #370

Jessica walked into Katelyn’s Kuriosities, one of the shops selling strange and mostly useless trinkets at Pike’s Place Market in Seattle. Chimes tinkled as the door shut behind her. Oddities stuffed the shelves: lollipops with scorpions inside them, whoopee cushions, magic trick kits. It had been years since Jessica had been to this part of Seattle, and not much had changed. The air still smelled like fish and spices; the sidewalks still had a slightly grimy feel to them. An older lady with short, red, curly hair (it was probably dyed) st...

The Council of Elders

Weekly Contest #367

“Happy birthday!” Nearly everyone I had ever known my entire life shouts as I enter my home for the last time. They’re here to celebrate my last birthday on Earth. The last birthday before I join the Council of Elders. They’ve created a balloon arch in the living room using my favorite colors: pastel pink and purple. On the top of the arch, “Happy Birthday” is written on big foam blocks, one letter per block. On one end of the room, next to the wall, a table is set up with a three-tiered cake. All this to celebrate the day I’ve been dreadin...

Servant of the People

Weekly Contest #366

“Come to breakfast, Andrew,” my wife, Mary, said, rousing me from my reverie as I looked out the window onto Oliver Street. The sun was shining, with fluffy clouds drifting across the sky. There seemed to be fewer people on the street than normal for a Wednesday. A few workmen strolling by, a four-horse coach making a delivery of building supplies for the new customs building, but that was about it. The economy had taken a dive ever since the war. My business had suffered, but I was still making a profit. I sighed, then smiled as I turned ...

Kitten Killer

Weekly Contest #365

I have to confess: I am not actually a kitten killer. Even though (almost) everybody thinks I am. “Mrow?” Misty, my solid gray cat, rubs up against my thigh while I’m sitting on my couch. I set down my knitting. “Who’s a good kitty?” I ask, scratching her head. She purrs with delight. “I wuv you so much!” My late husband used to say I was silly to talk to my cat like she’s my baby, but I disagree. I’m a cat lady now, but I’m not crazy—or, at least, I don’t think I am. The groceries aren’t going to magically appear on my doorstep. “Gotta g...

Quarantine

Weekly Contest #364

Day 1: Today I failed the blood test that tested us for the new plague that’s going around. I feel fine, but they told me I had to go into quarantine. “This is unfair!” I said, pounding on the door. I could see Reginald, my guard, through the small window in the door. He shrugged sadly at me. There wasn’t much he could do. It was the law. According to the news, people were dropping dead from this disease within a week. They let me take my diary and a pen, at least. And a pencil, in case the pen runs out of ink. They’ll let me out of here...

Kate by the Ocean

Weekly Contest #363

Kate looked out over the Atlantic, a giddy smile plastered onto her face. The sky was bright and blue, and a light breeze gently ruffled the red curls that escaped from her straw hat. “I can’t believe I finally get to go! And on such a magnificent ship!” She had seen the Atlantic before, of course, growing up in a small coastal village in Ireland, but she had never seen it look so beautiful, so full of hope. This was going to be the first, and perhaps only, time she’d ever cross it. “I’m so excited for you!” her younger sister, May, beame...

Greed's Curse

Weekly Contest #362

As Julia passed by the herbalist’s tent at the market, she stopped when something caught her eye. Among the shelves of dried herbs and tiny vials of potions, she saw a book. The vendor was nowhere to be seen, probably behind the canvas curtain in the back of the stall. When she entered, the cool shade washed over her. The book just sat there on the table, drawing her in. Waiting to be stolen. It was made of brown leather, trimmed in gold. No title graced the cover, just a gold crescent moon. She knew what it was, even though it was obvious...

Summer's End, End of Love

Weekly Contest #361

The last box was almost packed when I found it. Stowed away in the far corner of my bedroom closet. It wasn’t much to look at. A pint-sized jar filled with sand and a couple small rocks. A small sand dollar. And the ring. It was tiny, big enough to fit my seven-year-old finger. A glass stone in the center. It felt like a real diamond at the time. The band was made of some gold-colored metal. Maybe it was even gold-plated. It was cheap, but to my younger self, it felt like a fortune. A memory from long ago: sun-filled days of childhood. Bef...
