Weekly Contest #377
Still wet from yesterday’s ordeal, Katryn stirred, tried to get up but her hands were still tied at her back. She blinked in the dimness, shivered on the bare earth of the lock-up. The chill of mud under her cheek brought her into full consciousness of the past few days, the freezing water, the screams and taunts of her neighbours around the pond, the misery, isolation, grief for her children dying, one after the other and the helplessness against the power of the pestilence. Why had it spared her and taken her children? Katryn lay on the co...
Weekly Contest #342
Bracelet Man 1607 words Jane pulls her puffa-coat collar closer and re-arranges her flapping scarf. There must be a warmer way of earning a living than this, she thinks, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and wishing, as always, that she could afford a pitch inside one of the barns. She squinted into the raw sunlight and saw a tall figure examining an antique chest near the gateway to the field. Hope flickered. The man was back! She recognised the way he ambled across the grass, oblivious to the cold, just...
Weekly Contest #288
Cornish Weekend 1480 words excl. title Ah! Peace! The breeze on my cheeks. The wind singing in the cords, the rush of the updraught, the buoyancy of the thermals over the cliffs. Just me. Alone. Alone up here. Swinging free. Solitude. Nothing better than solitude. Selfish? Maybe - but why? Nothing wrong with enjoying your own company. Absolute advantage on a desert island. OK then, I'm selfish. But isn't everybody? Perhaps that was why it all had all gone wrong with Rebecca. Rick pushed the thought away, checked his position and pulled at t...
Weekly Contest #240
The Tree 2647 words The wind raged through the winter-blackened branches of the great forest with the ferocity of the sea-wolves, from whose land it came. The oaks creaked and swayed with the blast, acknowledging the force, but holding fast against the attack - just as the humans, who lived on the forest fringes, held fast, trying to repel the warriors from over the water - warriors who came in dragon-ships to destroy, pillage, steal - and then retreat across the...
Fair Exchange words 2203 The breeze chills my skin and whips wisps of hair into my eyes. I ball fists into my pockets and hug my jacket close. Why the text? Meet me. Peacock Manor after work. Please come. Pretty please. What's Will up to? Peacock Manor. Sounds flash.. Where is this place anyway? Miles from the bus stop. Huge houses. Too posh by half. Too hilly in these heels - and all those tree roots bulging up out of the pavement. The wind's stronger up here, whistling through the branches. Makes me shiver. Wow. There's...
Weekly Contest #191
Looking for Excitement? 1471 words ex. title Haruto stepped out of the elevator feigning a confidence he didn't feel. Nine young men wearing masks stood in line. As he watched, one of them swayed and fainted to the floor. An older man, wearing a striped, wide-belted, kimono, jerked his head, indicating for Haruto to join the line up, then he dragged the body of the unconscious youth across to the elevator, bundled it in and pressed the DOWN arrow. Haruto took his place in the vacated gap. He studied h...
Weekly Contest #110
Leader of the Pack 2153 words Bill, Gary and Chuck were the Tigers. They rode their cherished motorbikes, wore their fringed leathers and swept past lines of traffic, with arrogance – and not a little aggression. What do all those jerks in tin cages crawling along the Interstate know about living? On their big two-wheelers, customised with top-of-the-range, after-market extras, studded rawhide saddlebags and a stash of bolt-on chrome garbage, they wove through the gridlo...
