5:00 A.M. The alarm rang softly in the dark beside the bed.A hand reached out from under the blanket and pressed the button on top to turn it off before it got louder. The house was quiet. The man stayed still for a moment, looking up at the ceiling while he woke up, seeing a little gray light at the edge of the curtains. He took a deep breath, pushed the covers away, and sat up.
