Sheep's Clothing

Weekly Contest #375

In the forest, on a lonely trail, travelled a single young lady. Her body covered head to toe with a light green cloak, its hood drawn over her face. A basket of goodies bounced in one arm, her other swinging the edges of her cloak along with the tune of she was softly singing. It was a melody of the promise of peace and prosperity. One sung a long time ago, by the old hunters who used to clear this forest of the monsters that haunted it. The song went that 'though their days were long, that tomorrow would be a brighter day.' Her grandmothe...

Tethered

Weekly Contest #369

Four cardboard boxes containing old sketchbooks and a dozen canvas paintings. That is all my father leaves for me in his will. My three older sisters got lucky. Rose got his mustang, Penelope got his laptop and Lily got his records. They weren't thrilled but I reminded them they could flip them for a couple of bucks at least. They both looked at me with unified disgust. "We're not like you Violet." And then Rose chimed in. "Yeah, besides it makes sense that you got his old art stuff. You were always his favorite." I reminded her that if ...

Fly North

Weekly Contest #368

Getsy stared down at her catch. The green slimy frog stared back up at her with beady eyes. "Did you just say something?" The frog stared back, "Uhm, yeah. I said I'm the Frog of the Pond. Whoever catches me will be granted one wish." "You're not serious." "Pretty serious. Why else would I be speaking to you know?" "Because you're a regular 'non-wish granting' magical talking frog just trying to get away from being eaten?" "I could see how you would think that, but that's not the case. I am magical, I can speak, and I can grant wishes....

To The Ocean!

Weekly Contest #324

Darkness broke around me as I pushed through the surface and into the light. The first sound that greeted me was the waves of the ocean. I blinked the sand out of my eyes and gazed at what lay far ahead. Light like diamonds were dancing along its blue surface. It waves rolling over them, pulling me towards it like a siren’s song. The sun blazing above the shoreline like a blazing beacon. And I could feel the salt against my face. Ah, it felt so refreshing. So majestic. I allowed myself a moment to take in this sight. To breath in this sigh...

Cradle

Weekly Contest #323

Every evening, I take a little stroll to a place I call the Stone Yard to visit my favorite stone there and take a little nap. It doesn’t seem like much, but it’s kinda become my favorite thing in the world to do. Getting there is a bit of a way off, but out of everything in my strict schedule, this nap is one thing I cannot skip. If I do, the rest of my day is ruined! Nay, the rest of my week is tarnished! I normally start my stroll in the Concrete Jungle of where I live. Past dark tunnels and large buildings, and down a winding road that...

The Knight of Turnips and Weeds

Weekly Contest #322

I’m getting too old to be a squire. Thought Tommus as he swung the saddle over his knight’s steed. Sir Pony, the old warhorse who spent his entire life eating carrots and apples far from any war-torn battlefield, shook with annoyance. “There, there. Plenty of apples and carrots await you. Just one more match. And it’ll probably end quickly. That our knight has made it this far is nothing short of a miracle. Perhaps we’ve earned the gods’ favor, or they just have sick sense of humor. Either way, just one more match and we’re done.” Tommus ...

Rocks Fall, Everybody Dies

Weekly Contest #321

Four stone tiled walls locked around them. An identical ceiling and floor finished the trap. The walls were identical to the next, matching only the ceiling and floor. If one were to somehow walk on the walls they would think it were the floor. For no feature on these cold stone walls spoke of a way out. No trace of a door nor breeze flew through a false opening. The trap had been set and sprung. The enclosed room was filled with darkness and only the noise of the shuffling of four grizzled Dwarven adventures within. They had shared many a q...

The Little Girl and the Old Lady Who was Not a Witch

Shortlisted for Weekly Contest #320 ⭐️

"For the last time, what makes you think I am a witch?" Agatha stared down at the little primly dressed girl. She wore a pink dress, fur lined gloves, and a cloak of delicate fur from some animal far from this place. Her golden hair gleamed with lotions of luxury and a shining jeweled brooch on her chest said she belonged to the Duke’s family in town. The girl had been pestering Agatha the last few days. Though she was being quite polite in her accusations, they didn’t come with a threat of burning or drowning, but they were still quite bo...

Goodbye Carrot

Weekly Contest #296

Floorboards creaked ominously throughout the abandoned mansion. Furniture and cabinetry were all covered in cloth, like corpses being covered. Cobwebs and dust were the only residents of this once majestic manor on the hill. Yet in one of the rooms, a fire was lit in the fireplace. A woman sat by the fireplace. Her cheeks freshly red. Her eyes watery and downcast. “I’m sorry I brought you back this way, just to take you back out of it. I’m so sorry.” She spoke across the room. She stood, “But if I don’t destroy you now, well…I don’t want to...

The Goblin Cave

Weekly Contest #295

One of the last gifts my Grandmum gave me was a treasure map. At least that’s what I thought it was. I mean, what else could a large scroll of parchment wrapped up tightly with twine be. Despite the gloomy circumstances, I am quite excited to be receiving a gift so soon after my ninth birthday (normally I have to wait till Christmas). So I go to unravel the twine, but my Grandmum stops me with a gentle, shaking hand. “Don’t open it till I’m gone, love. Then, when you begin to miss me, open it and it will lead you back to me.” I hugged her ...

They Live

Weekly Contest #294

“The donuts are gaining sentience.” I glance up from my laptop screen with no doubt a bewildered expression, taking in the elderly lady who sat before me, chin leaning on the top of her cane and her adder like eyes staring out onto the small café floor. I hadn’t even noticed her sitting here, but there she was, with a leather cap as weathered and wrinkled as she was, wrinkled hands clamped atop a walking cane and her dark adder eyes staring out with suspicion upon the café floor. “Pardon?” “The donuts, they’ve gained sentience and are tak...

Sheathed Feelings

Weekly Contest #259

In the shadows of the forest, they creeped. Shambling figures slowly marched forward. Their rotting flesh hanging off their marred humanoid torsos. Rusted weapons grasped in their cold dead hands. The cursed undead sentinels that haunted the forest. Cursed to undying hunger for flesh, they roamed. Elowin lined her bow arm against the length of an oakwood. Pressing her weight against the weight of the mossy bark, she felt connected to the forest. It calmed her. Kept her nerves in check. It was a trick her late father had taught him, to keep ...

The Tree

Weekly Contest #258

College was hell. I’m sure that’s not a unique statement. As I’m sure I’m not the only one who suffered through it. But it seemed that for everyone else, it paid off. I spent most of college both trying to be a student and trying to learn to be an adult. Half of the time my head was buried in a textbook or glued to my laptop at my work, and the other half I was working a soul sucking job waiting on other people. When my studies didn’t make me feel like a complete loser, my work certainly did. Still, like a dung beetle, I trampled onwards. A...
