I never liked being alone. Nighttime was the worst. When Mom would press that final bedtime kiss against my forehead, sealing my fate, every step she took tug, tug, tugging the strings of my heart with her. The door would creak as she closed it, sealing me in the suffocatingly silent tomb of my bedroom. I’d hold my breath. Count to ten. Press my ear against the pastel pink wall and listen.
