Becky Sweeney

Becky Sweeney – Editor

Experienced editor of genre fiction offering support specific to the needs of each individual client and story.

I am passionate about collaborating with writers and empowering them to achieve success. Together we will develop your work to discover the maximum potential of your story.

I specialise in genre fiction: romance, erotica, crime, fantasy, science-fiction, YA, historical, lit fic, etc. This includes novels, screenplays, plays and short stories as well as experimental forms of fiction.

I have a first-class BA (Hons) degree in English & Film and an MA in Creative Writing, with distinction. I graduated top of my class in both degrees, and was also awarded the University medal on both occasions. The MA programme I attended was heavily genre-focused, hence my specialism.

As a freelance novel editor, I have worked on a range of novels, from traditionally published international best sellers, to indie publications, to debut self-pubs, and most things in between.

I offer developmental editing, focusing on character development, narrative arcs, world-building, structure, plotting. I also offer meticulous proofreading and copy-editing for the final stage of your project as well as mentoring, supporting writers to get from their first draft to their final draft.

I love developing work with debut authors just as much as working with an established writer. I’m personable and friendly and believe that the editor/writer relationship is a special one.

I can’t wait to work with you! Drop me a message and we can get started!

Becky has been wonderful. She gave in-depth, actionable feedback. She went through the trouble of researching my project, not only before the assessment but before the call as well. She gave specific examples in answer to my questions and understood perfectly what I was trying to achieve. I feel very motivated to finish the edits, and very lucky for working with such a great editor!

I really enjoyed working with Becky, I went through 5 or 6 different editors before I settled on her and I'm so glad I did. Her work to help me get my book ready to publish has been invaluable, Becky has been helpful and friendly and is always there for me to ask anything I need. I will definitely work with her again!

It’s a rarity that you find someone as hardworking and dedicated to their craft as Becky. Not only did she point out elements of my story that needed changes, but she always offered quality solutions to my problems. With that, Becky is the definition of what it means to go the extra mile. I continually found myself amazed by her eagerness to deliver clarity and value, making the changes she ma...

I chose Becky because my story is based in Edinburgh and I hoped that she could add some authentic flavor to the dialog as well as local descriptions. From the start, she was enthusiastic about my project and my motivation. She even visited some of the locations of the scenes. Her edit far exceeded my expectations. Her suggestions for dialog were natural and extremely authentic. She noticed th...
