Sarah Barker

Sarah Barker – Editor

Copywriter and former Production Assistant at U of MN Press editing non-fiction and YA with attention to cultural sensitivity.

Overview

Hello there! I’m a former production assistant at the University of Minnesota Press and a freelance copy editor. In college, I did paid work as a media specialist for nonprofit Students for Education Reform and as a writing consultant. I also interned at boutique press Coffee House and completed the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs course Writing for Social Change. All these experiences led me to pursue a career in working with words in a way that bridges social divides and explores the diversity in human experience.

In my past role at University of Minnesota Press, I had the pleasure of working with the words of seasoned scholars writing about everything from feminist theory in Mad Max: Fury Road to the historical impact of American newsreels. Now I would like to expand my copy editing into the fiction realm, which is why I've started freelancing. I am particularly interested in working with authors who are pushing boundaries and exploring sensitive topics.

In my edits, my focus is always on helping the author’s voice shine through. I am committed to reading with cultural sensitivity and advocating for precise, accurate language. From my editing, expect a detailed style sheet, clean tracked changes, continuity errors addressed, punctuation in its place, and plenty of queries to ensure that I've understood the intent behind your words.

Sarah is very detailed and thorough. She did a fantastic job of finding all the things I missed and of offering suggestions for changes for clarity and sensitivity that I hadn't though about. Fantastic edit.

Sarah's work on my manuscript was very helpful! She explained all of my mistakes and corrected them consistently, all the while suggesting different words to suit an American audience. I'm happy that I got to work with her, as she is always punctual and professional.
