Overview
My only goal is to support you and your project. I can help your writing shine while staying true to your intention, personal style, and voice. I’ll clean up the grammar, clarify inconsistencies, omit redundancies, and improve the overall flow of the writing. While doing so, I’ll keep my communication with you positive, professional, and encouraging.
I’ve worked on over a dozen books as an editor at Pages & Pie Publishing, from fiction to creative nonfiction. One of these books won a Clarion Award. I have an MA in English (Professional and Technical Writing), and I've worked at several other places as an editor. In addition, I'm an avid reader and writer. I have had a few short stories published, and I know what it's like to be on the receiving end of edits. I understand the hard work and passion you've put into your manuscript, and I will treat it - and you - with respect.
On a personal level, I am the mom of two girls, I enjoy exercising and trying to live healthy, I have an obsession with historic covered bridges, and I am in the National Guard.
Now on to my passion: editing books! The first step for any book is usually a developmental edit, where I’ll assess the overall structure of the story. During this edit, I will cover the following:
· Is your opening strong and does it engage your reader? How about the ending? Does the ending leave the reader with more questions than answers?
· Are your characters likeable (when they should be) and described memorably?
· Is your plot clear, well-paced, and free from coincidences or conveniences that detract from the believability of the story?
· Are there any holes, gaps, or inconsistencies (from the minute details such as hair color to the larger issues, like timelines)?
· Fact checking—I’ll make sure anything tied to the real world is correct.
· If you’ve built a large world, I can help with a manuscript-specific style guide to keep all the characters, rules of the world, and other stylistic choices straight while editing.
If a line edit is needed, I can also do that. This is where each sentence is scrutinized to make sure it is clear, necessary, and structured correctly. I’ll also consider word choices and keep a lookout for redundant words or phrases. Writers should aim for original content, so I will point out cliché phrases, idioms that may not be widely understood, or other expressions that may need to be changed.
Edits won’t be finished until you are satisfied. Then, a proofread will need to be done. This is where the final product is polished. I can also provide proofreading for your manuscript to ensure it is error free.
I’ll do this all on your timeline. I have excellent organizational skills and I work well with set deadlines.
