Adam Blackman

Adam Blackman – Editor

Experienced acquisitions & developmental editor of children's literature, picture books through middle grade, and writing instructor.

Overview

"Adam is a truly insightful and thoughtful reader/editor with a deep understanding of picture books. His critiques are to the point, relevant and (most importantly) doable. He really sees the story you are trying to tell and helps to make it the best story it can be. Adam is responsible for some of the best changes I have made in many manuscripts...I would highly recommend him."

-Ellen Tarlow, author of LOOKING FOR SMILE and BECOMING BLUE

After my MFA in fiction, I ran a nonprofit bookstore for many years before making a leap to teach writing in classrooms and community settings. I found my way to kidlit in 2018, first as a writer, then (and now) an editor.

I believe strongly that the seed of a realized project is embedded in its spark. With written critiques, line edits, and optional video or phone call, I help writers identify the core of their work and make decisions from overall concept to word choice.

I love picture books of all stripes, though am not the best fit for rhyme. In the past few years, I have fallen head over heels for middle grade, with a general preference for contemporary and realistic but an open mind and heart for fantasy and other genres. I also feel a personal debt to chapter books for helping encourage my son to read and would be delighted to help bring the next Dory Fantasmagory into the world!

Working with independent publishers means I work closely with all parts of the industry and publishing process, from agents to sales and marketing. I can provide market insights to help you hone your pitch and query package if you are looking for an agent, help you decide what to show your agent next, or set goals and plan for self-publishing.

I am looking forward to learning more about your project!

"Adam's editing was insightful, kind, but direct - the perfect combination. His questions and observations have helped me in my revision process and will certainly improve the finished product."

I enjoyed meeting Adam and working with him on my PB. He provided resources in his initial assessment, provided justification where he has questions and he didn't make assumptions on the characters. We had a virtual meeting and I was able to provide the answers and context regarding my characters...

Thank you, Phyllistine. You were a joy to work with (see, I told you I'd write that) and your story has so much promise. I look forward to ordering it some day from my local indie (bookstore plug).

Working with Adam was a joy! He understood my story's mission and provided suggestions that significantly enhanced my manuscript. His creativity inspired me, and I was able to have lots of fun reworking jokes while adding depth to my characters and plot. Can't wait to work with him again!

Thanks Cortney. I'm super impressed by your ambitious (I almost wrote amphibious) projects and appreciate you trusting me to help you develop your series.

I had a 30 minute meeting with Adam. It took me a few minutes to get into the zoom meeting but Adam gave me an extra minute or two to end meeting. Adam was very helpful with his feedback and advice. I have ideas for my next draft so can move to the next step. Thanks Adam!

How can authors effectively identify and describe their target audience for a book proposal?

"Children" is not a target market! You have to specify age range. Children's books (aka kidlit) cover the entire span of childhood and literacy development from board books (that babies chew on) to young adult novels (that make teenagers swoon and ponder and protest and...). The standard rule i...
