Overview

I'm a graphic designer with 20 years of experience in publication, branding and typography. I've worked with authors from various backgrounds including museums, healthcare, music, academia and commercial.

My most recent work was creating publications for the Natural History Museum in London which would be read by the general public, museum professionals, high value donors and senior british politicians.

Recently I designed a complex, text and reference-heavy medical book that explores drug use and it's effects. I've also created both high quality photographic coffee table books and lo-fi zines.

TESTIMONIALS:
"I will always recommend Wayne for book cover and interior design. Not only is he an expert in design and technical specs, but he has mastered the art of communication and collaboration." - GRAHAM BARTON, author of Tracks That Sync

"Once more Wayne hit it out of the park for me! He's always thinking of the end product for the reader and making it work! He did this all very quickly, for a terrific price, and per usual, his trademark quality yielding a beautiful result!" - JENNIFER MAKSIMOVICH, author of Two Shadows

"Always quick to communicate and very proactive upfront, the process was smooth and Wayne delivered a great result. I am certainly happy with the outcomes and would recommend Wayne to anyone..." - FIONA McDONNELL, author of Two Mirrors and a Cheetah

"Wayne is creative, diligent, flexible and generous (he worked on more revisions than I'd anticipated he would). I highly recommend Wayne for translating a complex set of themes into a captivating book cover." - CHARLIE HUGH-JONES, author of Be More, What To Do When You Can't DO Anymore

MY ETHOS:
I believe book design is a privilege for a designer as it demands that we get a full grasp of the subject matter and a comprehensive understanding of the intellectual context and the readership market that the book will exist within.
As I am instinctively curious (with an Amazon book wishlist as proof!) this is an added bonus. I can continuously learn while carrying out the craft that I love.

WHAT YOUR BOOK NEEDS:
Beautiful eye-catching design is essential to your book's success.
But it should always be in service to the content - by illuminating and reinforcing the written word.
It should be sympathetic to the work but not conventional.
Your book's cover needs to distill it's themes into an elegant graphic composition informing the potential reader of it's intent and inviting them to pick it up to learn more.

I strive to do all this with every single project I work on.

Work experience

Natural History Museum - Senior designer

Natural History Museum, London
May, 2016 – June, 2020 (about 4 years)

As well as designing exhibition graphics, invitations, signage etc. my main role was designing publications including three years of annual reviews, exhibition portfolios for international partners, internal publications regarding museum operations and membership magazines.
I managed all projects from initial scoping meetings, through the various stages of development and stakeholder sign-off to final artwork for printers.
I also managed scheduling, price quote procurement from various external printers and design specs like paper types, binding and finishing.
I worked closely with senior management right up to Museum Director to design and deliver publications that were effective, rigorous and delivered on time and to the highest quality specifications.

Over a 6 week complex collaboration, Wayne took a complex manuscript with 63 infographics and transformed it into a world class business book and ebook ready for sale. He also created an impactful and engaging cover design that looks great on all my sales channels. For the volume and complexity of the work he carried out, his price was incredibly reasonable. As an executive who has hired many...

Wayne is incredible to work with. He designed the cover and interior of my book, and he exceeded my expectations at every turn. For the cover, he really listened to what I was looking for and came back with several gorgeous and distinct options. He then fine tuned the one that I liked best until it was exactly what I wanted. It came out perfectly. For the interior, he created a layout that is v...
