This is possibly the last entry in my diary that no one will ever read.
It will document all the events that led up to this final countdown and possibly the most horrific moment in the history of mankind.
The events entered will keep you wondering if they are true, real and actual, yet have you second guessing the outcome of all things sane and normal.
The date was Tuesday November 21st, 2099. The last 10 seconds of celebration before our entry into the year 2100 A.D. We were testing rocket boosters that would make what once took several decades to achieve in travel, now was only a split second to achieve.
First entry- 10 seconds to the new year becoming a reality. It was more like a dream that had been planned out by our predecessors and now it was to become a moment to be remembered.
Second entry- 9 seconds to the new year becoming a reality. It was to be a moment closer to all that we had trained for, had worked very hard to make happen, to live to see it in our lifetime, but then a red light went off and then chaos.
Third entry- 8 seconds that would change the course of our moment, from the launching and the liftoff of the very space shuttle which had endured massive damage in the last violent storm. It was becoming apparent that we were 25% prepared and the other 75% was sheer luck. Funding of this mission, later the start of many would be the groundbreaking moment planned and replanned, scheduled and rescheduled, endless trial and error moments filled with hopes for a successful outcome. More to come at a later time.......
Fourth entry- 7 seconds that would be more than we thought possible. We all looked on as though we were testing some new form of travel and yet we knew this would make or break the bank, literally. It was a small fire here and red lights flashing in the rear. Then one of the staff jumped up and screamed, "I cannot do this anymore." "I will not play God to mankind, for I am not worthy of the title." Security had to sedate him and that was the last we saw of Mr. Johnson.
Fifth entry- 6 seconds until the preceding moment was contained and things returned to calm. I was starting to bite my nails and become anxious. We had checked and double checked, rechecked and double rechecked the seals on this space shuttle, since it would take a beatdown and hopefully make its destination intact.
Sixth entry- 5 seconds into what would either be a historical moment meant to be remembered, a historical blunder. Either way we were playing a role not fit for humans, we were tempting the fate and setting our course for destiny as though we could (or try to) foresee the future. We seem to all agree in the beginning how we would work with this and make this a reality in the smallest way and come out succeeding. It would either make us better as humans or place us up there with those who had tried to be successful throughout history and had fail. Some of my own historical heroes, like Einstein, Napolean, Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, and Tesla. Some had wanted to rule the world and had failed. They had set their sights on the big picture, yet it was neither the right time nor right place. "Sorry I got sidetracked."
Seventh entry- 4 seconds before the new year would be here and it was like a pregnant woman about to give birth. As the moment was upon us, the room was becoming very warm, and I thought I would pass out. I stood up looking at the rest of the staff there, minus Mr. Johnson. Beads of sweat formed on my forehead, and I was shaking with anticipation and fear. It was about to be a crowning moment. In the back of my mind, I was thinking all sorts of things because those inner voices always tried to speak over each other, trying to be the loudest, with each one, I took my meds and hoped they all would subside. Eventually they stopped chatting.
Eighth entry- 3 seconds until the changing of the year and the new year, the next century would be here, arriving suddenly and with full force. It was like we had made preparations and had tried to plan the final leap, the final results of what we were about to witness. We were on the edge of our seats, grabbing for something to hold onto and brace ourselves for. It was like preparing for a test and then finding out you had studied the wrong chapters and had to make it up as you coasted along. It was a moment of excitement, and we all smiled at what could be the beginning of a bright future. That's when I noticed a bright light heading in our direction.
Ninth entry- 2 seconds to the moment of awareness and being able to start anew, "Was this even possible?" "Was I dreaming?" That bright light was edging close to us on the screen, was growing in size from a distant spot, the size of a dot on an I. It was there, and it was free falling at the speed of a runaway vehicle on a hilly slope. My mind is racing with all the things regretted never having done. I was not seeing this moment become obscure, not to be scrubbed and redone long after I had taken my final bow. I was aware now that we were somehow on a collision course with the sun. Both had somehow lost the ability to remain in space, suspended with no strings attached. Chaos returned as all those who had noticed this phenomenon and possible ending to this moment, were making the whole staff aware of that which had begun to become bigger than we imagined.
Final entry (Yes tenth entry)- 1 second before success or failure would raise us up or bring us crashing down. It had been more of a test and more of what we thought we were capable of. It had caused us to devote most of our adult lives to living below ground. We should had known that no matter what we decided that it may succeed on man's terms but not on the powers that be. I had heard of the Tower of Babel Complex. You want to take what you have, add to that and add more things to the mix before you are all out of resources. If this was to be a final curtain, then I would pray that I had done right by Him. With that I want to say, we will surely be missed, when we fail.
The end was quickly. It left much to be desired and more questions than answers.
Glad that was only a simulation.......
