Out of the woods came a small caramel colored bundle of fur. Wobbly legs carried his tiny frame across the line that denoted the border of the forest and the beginning of a lush spring pasture. Silky green grass tickled his teeny paws and his belly. Petite yellow flowers drew his eyes and his nose. He couldn’t help but meander over to sniff the delicate sent of the beautiful blossoms all around him.
He heard a noise he had never heard before and looked around to try to identify it and where it came from. He saw a creature fliting around from bloom to bloom. It made the most intriguing sounds. Buzz, buzz, buzz. Fuzzy golden granules clung to the creatures legs as it flew from one flower to the next.
Suddenly, a strange sensation struck his miniscule bladder. He found himself squatting and letting go a stream of tinkle into the grass. The feeling of relief made him wiggle around and bark a happy little bark. A rumbling in his tummy made him feel like there was a deep hole in his center and he didn’t know what to do about it.
Just as he started barking his little bark, he heard voices in the distance. He wasn’t sure how he knew they were voices that he was hearing but somehow he just knew. Raising his chin as high as he could he was just barely able to see the shadowy outline of giants, and they were coming his way!
The big group of giants stopped some distance away from where he stood looking up at them, tail wagging. One giant with yellow fur on her head slowly came toward him and leaned down holding her hand out in his direction. Because she seem nice he walked up to her and sniffed her fingertips, and then the rest of her hand. He was only a smidgen bigger than her entire hand.
She slowly reached out and touched his head and gave his ears gentle loving scratches. He enjoyed the way it felt and found himself moving closer to the yellow furred giant. He liked the way she smelled and the feel of her fingers rubbing his fur. The next thing he knew she had tenderly slipped her hand under his belly and lifted him up and held him against her chest.
Wow! Because his ear was on her skin, he could hear her strong and steady heartbeat. Her chin was on the top of his head, and she was giving him little kisses. Beyond his control, he found himself licking her fingers. He loved being held against her chest. It gave him a feeling of home.
Once he seemed to be comfortable in her arm, the yellow furred giant turned and took him over to the rest of the crowd. There were so many giants, he didn’t know what to do with himself. His tail was wagging so fast. It was all so much fun. Everyone wanted to touch him and give him love. He was incredibly happy.
He ran in the tickly grass from giant to giant getting every little itch scratched. He barked and snuffled at them with his puppy joy. One giant asked the rest what his name was, and no one seemed to know. He didn’t know what his name was, but he was sure he would know it when he heard it.
One giant with long dark hair called out the name Fergus. But that didn’t seem right to him, so he ignored her. He also heard Max, Woody, Buddy, Poppie, and Smittie. Nothing seemed to be his name. His favorite giant, the one with the yellow fur, leaned down and called him Larry and he knew it was his name! He was Larry and he was hers.
His wiggly butt danced around her outstretched hands as she repeated his name again and again. Yellow fur then asked if anyone had noticed where he had come from. Someone pointed over toward where he had come out of the woods. As a group they all headed over to the edge of the forest to take a look to see if they could find out where he came from.
Yellow fur wanted to make sure he wasn’t lost from his owners. He wished he could tell her that she was now his human. His one and only human. He couldn’t remember where he came from before stepping out of the woods. Had he ever been in the woods? He really didn’t remember.
Cuddled in the warm arms of Yellow fur, Larry, peeked out at the edge of the woods as they walked into them. He could see the bark on the trees with a bit of moss on it as they walked on the crunchy undergrowth of dried branches and twigs. Under the branches of a mayberry bush was a small blue blanket with paw prints on it. There was nothing else with the blanket, no note, no food, no toys, nothing. Larry had been abandoned with nothing to support his survival.
A scary noise came from Yellow fur, and it made Larry anxious. He looked up into her face and saw tears rolling down her cheeks and a whimper escaped from his throat. The sound had been a long groan that was a mix of sorrow and fury at whoever it was that left Larry by himself in the woods. He was obviously just a baby and couldn’t take care of himself.
Together Larry and Yellow fur walked out of the wood and headed home. They made a stop on the way there to buy him some goodies at the magical puppy store. He got a brilliant blue collar, his own comfy little doggy bed, special puppy food in a can and a bag, and some toys that were just for him. A nice giant in the store said he was a teacup dachshund.
Larry the teacup dachshund had come out of the woods and found a new home with Yellow fur, which he found out was called Willow. Together they made their way into Larry’s new home with this new human.
Now that they are home, Larry has spent some time exploring his new home. He had to check out every room, smelling every corner and every piece of furniture. Willow set out a dish of water and some puppy food for him so he could eat some dinner. Once he had finished his exploration and dinner he curled up on Willows lap and fell asleep. The woods were a thing of his past and fading fast from his puppy memory. Larry wanted to focus on the happy things of a new home with his human Willow. He was out of the woods forever.
