My name is Nate Fakes; and I'm a full-time staff cartoonist at an advertising agency, member of the National Cartoonists Society, cartoonist, illustrator, graphic designer, and visual artist in Los Angeles, California. My work has been published around the world in newspapers, television, billboards, greeting cards, websites, corporate offices, books and just about anywhere. I pride myself on being able to take an idea and running with it in regards to a unique cartoon, illustration, or other visual that fits perfectly with the publication that it's for.
I enjoy creating fun, engaging content. Many authors use - not just illustrators - but cartoonists to help add some humor to their work. My specialty is creating custom illustrations and cartoons that collaborate with the context of a publication. I've been creating illustrations and cartoons for publications for over a decade and can create content that would be yours to use as you would like in your book. Whenever I create custom work, the rights are granted to the publisher, so the cartoons would not appear anywhere else.
I'm known as one of "The Usual Gang of Idiots" at MAD Magazine and my off-the-wall cartoons and illustrations. But, I can typically work with any project that suites my style and capabilities and adjust accordingly.
So, why work with me?
I'm fun, easy-going and professional. I ensure quality in everything I do and stand by my work. I offer rough examples before diving into a finished cartoon and together we make sure the cartoon - or illustration - is perfect before I finalize anything.
I'm a great communicator and ensure that we're on the same page with your project. I'm very open to Skype calls, emails, etc. and respond promptly. I love to talk in person and get to know who I'm working with as well.
I'll also be very upfront about the humor and visual aspect of what you would like done. Considering I create a daily syndicated cartoon, I have a good idea of what humor works and what doesn't, so I'll be sure to offer as much insight as possible.
All this being said, I have a strong work ethic. Knowing my work is going to be out in the public eye, I ensure it is the best I can do.
- Will mention your book to my thousands of followers on social media
- Am able to create up to three revisions before finalizing any illustration
- Have credentials that can help promote your book
I urge you to visit to learn more about my work and myself at And I look forward to hearing about your project.

“He meets the highest standard in my book: he is a valued member of MAD’s “Usual Gang of Idiots”. True, he’s a terrific cartoonist – full of funny ideas and funny pictures – which is what got him into MAD in the first place.”
-Sam Viviano, Art Director, MAD Magazine
" Your book is great!"
- Jim Davis, creator of Garfield
“We first started working with Nate when we created Thought Leadership in May of 2013. He’s illustrated every monthly strip since then. He somehow manages to bring an unexpected and always appropriate visual element to everything he does. And his singular sense of humor is as much a part of his style as his illustrations. We look forward to a very long ride together.”
- Mark O’Brien, founder and Principal, O’Brien Communications Group
"WOW… you have some serious talent! Love your work."
- Doris Winters, Art Director, Costco Connection Magazine
“Nate is an extremely talented, knowledgeable and easy-going artist. He delivered above all expectations within the budget and timeframe given. We are very pleased with his performance, and will definitely use his services in the future. 100% recommended.”
