Emily Murdock Baker

Emily Murdock Baker – Editor

Polishing prose since 2009, including NYT bestsellers and Edgar Award winners. My film background gives me unique insight as an editor.

Overview

After three years in Hollywood and seven years at Penguin Random House, I left to go out on my own in 2016 because my favorite part of my job has always been working directly with writers to improve their work. Now that's 90% of my work time, and I don't miss sitting in meetings at all (though I do miss office baked goods).

I've spent my entire professional career working with creatives. I'm also married to a writer and am a writer myself, so I know what it's like to be on the other side of edits! I'm a compassionate editor who will point out the problems in your manuscript and help you brainstorm ways to solve them.

I can help you get your project to the next level, whatever that means for you.

Although mysteries, historical fiction, and narrative nonfiction are mainly what I work on, I love variety. I've also edited screenplays, parenting books, romance, a cocktail book, and a family memoir with over 100 photos!

Work experience

Self-employed

May, 2016 — Present
I went freelance so I could focus on my favorite part of my job: working with writers to improve their prose. I've helped hundreds of authors improve their writing, and many have gone on to find an agent and get published, or self- or hybrid publish.

Penguin Random House

May, 2010 — Apr, 2016 (almost 6 years)
I acquired and edited a broad range of fiction and nonfiction for the Penguin Books, Viking, and Putnam imprints of PRH. Highlights include Paul French’s New York Times bestselling and award-winning Midnight in Peking; Alex Marwood’s award-winning The Wicked Girls, The Killer Next Door, and The Darkest Secret; Catherine Bailey’s New York Times bestselling The Secret Rooms and Black Diamonds.

The Firm/Firm Films

May, 2008 — Oct, 2008 (6 months)
I read and wrote coverage on a wide variety of scripts, novels, and comic books, researched writers, books, and ideas for potential projects, and helped with pre-production on Royal Pains on USA.

Brooklyn Films

Jan, 2007 — Mar, 2008 (about 1 year)
Script coverage and scene breakdowns; notes on screenplays; scheduling and phones; some on-set assisting. Worked on post-production of The Starter Wife miniseries and pre-produciton, production, and post on Righteous Kill.
