Melissa Ann Singer

Melissa Ann Singer – Editor

Former Senior Editor at Tor/Forge, edited award-winning & bestselling genre fiction for adult readers: sf/f, horror, mystery, thriller, etc.

Overview

In my 40+ years in publishing, I've edited hundreds of books for adult readers, nearly all genre fiction (sf, fantasy, horror, mystery, thriller, paranormal romance, historical, western, and more).

Adding this because I've gotten a lot of YA requests and I hate to see writers wasting their time: Please note that I do not edit YA; I've neither the "ear" nor the necessary experience.

There are few things more satisfying than seeing a writer's imagination catch fire as we work together. I love digging in with a writer and exploring their world, their characters, and the story they want to tell.

If I make you an offer, it's because I like the work and feel that I will enjoy working on it and with you.

During editing, I do offer praise but to be honest, I'm rarely effusive. I don't want clients to feel that I'm saying nice things because they're giving me money! I want clients to feel that they're getting value for their money, and what I'm being paid for is my ability to analyze a client's work and help make it better.

Note: for all traditionally published works in my portfolio, I provided line-editing as well as developmental editing.

I have edited:

a Los Angeles Times bestseller

2 New York Times bestsellers

a USA Today bestseller

2 Bram Stoker Award winners

6 Bram Stoker Award finalists

1 World Fantasy Award winner

3 World Fantasy Award finalists

1 Alex Award winner

Because of the way Reedsy is set up, I can only specify a few genres/subgenres, but if you're working in genre fiction at novella length or longer, feel free to approach me regardless of subgenre.

Tor Books

Jan, 1985 — Mar, 2022 (about 37 years)

When I started at Tor, there were not even a dozen employees. Over the decades, the company grew to become the largest English language publisher of speculative fiction in the world. I've lost track of how many books I edited for them and for Berkley, my previous employer, but am guessing something around 1,000 titles, both fiction and nonfiction.

Melissa was a joy to work with. She provided clear, concise, and comprehensive feedback on the query letter and long synopsis for my new novel through three drafts of each. In addition to rolling up her sleeves and giving both items close copyedits, she also provided an overview of each item's strengths and weaknesses. She did a masterful job of bringing her considerable experience to bear as a...

Melissa did a developmental edit on a fantasy manuscript for me. She's brilliant, professional, and offers valuable feedback. She communicated throughout the process, which I appreciated. The timelines were accurate, and she delivered early. I wish I had a tenth of her knowledge. At least by working with her, I can apply the feedback to future manuscripts. She was my best shot at success, and I...

Melissa helped me refine my query letter and synopsis, giving me a clearer sense of where I could make things stronger. Her feedback was crucial for getting this to the next level 💪

I keep coming back to Melissa for good reasons. She has a wealth of experience and a keen eye for detail. A true professional in every aspect, her skills as a developmental editor are second to none. Her honest feedback, always delivered with the best intentions, has been invaluable to my writing process. I cannot recommend her enough.

When my book reached a point where I thought it was ready to be seen by other people, some acquaintances read it and gave high level comments that were quite encouraging. But I had some doubts about the structural completeness of the story, and the balance between info-dumping and action. I also wondered whether the details in the story would make sense to someone who had not been babbled at ab...

Elyse is right, I was not as responsive as usual while working on this project, and I feel terrible about that. As an explanation, not an excuse, this was due to issues with a piece of equipment ...
