Kristen Stieffel

Kristen Stieffel – Editor

Fantasy and science fiction specialist. I focus on the Christian submarket but also edit fiction for the general market.

Overview

I'm an author, editor, and instructor specializing in speculative fiction. My parents were Trekkies before anyone coined that word, and they raised me on Asimov and Tolkien. I am geek to the core, y'all.

I have edited more than 80 books for more than 60 clients in my years as a freelance editor. Most of these are speculative fiction—that is, science fiction, fantasy, and their subgenres, including steampunk, cyberpunk, and all the other -punks. My own works include a collection of steampunk novellas and a fantasy novel that is the first in a series that will have four books. Maybe five. Book two is currently with my editor for a planned release in 2024.

In the Before Times, I frequently taught at writing conferences, and since things have opened back up, I’ve resumed teaching seminars for libraries and writing groups. I approach editing as instruction. My goal is to help writers take what I teach them in each edit and apply it to their future work so they continually improve.

Thank you also for all your kind words and encouragement. I know the series will be so much stronger for your insight.—Jeannette Jonic

Kristen was great throughout the process even though I was new to how this system worked. The initial quote she gave me was informative, giving me enough information that I knew she would be a good fit, and she was very cooperative when I asked questions before making the decision to hire her. I went into the project feeling confident and got more or less what I expected in terms of the project.

Communication with Kristin went very well, and she even gave me ideas for edits and improvements through messages before she produced her final assessment. I felt she cared about what she was doing and was invested in doing a good job.
