Jules Elmore

Jules Elmore – Editor

Seasoned story coach, developmental editor, fiction expert - 20 years experience. A passion for gripping stories. A mission to empower you.

Overview

I am the author of THE AMATEUR AMERICAN (Crown) and a former creative writing instructor (New York University, Tulane University) with nearly ten years of teaching experience and over a decade of professional editing experience.

As an actively publishing novelist, I bring a storyteller's mindset to my editorial and coaching projects. These have ranged from literary fiction, to commercial mysteries and thrillers, to creative nonfiction and memoir--though I specialize in psychological suspense, crime, and dystopian fiction.

The result has been publications at the highest level of the industry, with books sold to top publishers, including Penguin, Putnam, Crown, and Little, Brown, as well as to notable university and academic presses.

In addition to expert developmental editing and mindful book coaching, my services include:

- Editorial assessment

- Structural editing

- Actionable feedback

- Line and copy editing

- Concept and story building

- Character and scene-work refinement

- Query letter development and refinement

- Agent acquisition strategies

All of these services are aimed at taking your manuscript to the next level--at any stage of the book-drafting process--and making your story shine.

My approach to this work is an extension of my life philosophy: I engage all writers with honesty and empathy, always encouraging what the work aspires to be, always tailoring my feedback to the writer's expressed needs, always thoughtful and always thorough.

So whether your project is ready for a top-tier editorial eye, or you're simply stuck mid-draft and need seasoned guidance, let me help your story reach the destination it deserves.

Highly professional and responsive, Jules goes above and beyond to ensure progress. Hiring him to coach me on my biography, Black Pearl, was worth every penny.

After an initial complementary zoom meeting, Jules provided inline comments/edits which were very actionable, and a written summary of his findings and higher level best practices to keep in mind when revising the work. Jules provided the kind of feedback that my book really needed and that I had been trying but failing to obtain from beta readers and workshops. While it is an investment, I mad...

Jules is a consummate professional. We engaged thoroughly during the initial call and his developmental work on my fantasy novel came back as he described. He has given me a descriptive 9-page editorial review with the overarching feedback on the manuscript. I have just started digging into the detailed notes but am very pleased with the care given to my work. I asked for candid feedback and g...

Jules helped me write a pretty stellar cover letter. Not very responsive though.

Jules gave me a considerable offer to fit my budget and help craft more of my novel. With his thorough explanation of helping/ his reviews, I was hopeful and excited about our collaboration. He provided good documents but noticed they had unfinished words/ typos, which made it hard to understand. The downside of this whole thing was the lack of communication when he did not show up not one but ...
