Jules Elmore

Jules Elmore – Editor

Seasoned story coach, developmental editor, fiction expert - 20 years experience. A passion for gripping stories. A mission to empower you.

Overview

I am the author of THE AMATEUR AMERICAN (Crown) and a former creative writing instructor (New York University, Tulane University) with nearly ten years of teaching experience and over a decade of professional editing experience.

As an actively publishing novelist, I bring a storyteller's mindset to my editorial and coaching projects. These have ranged from literary fiction, to commercial mysteries and thrillers, to creative nonfiction and memoir--though I specialize in psychological suspense, mystery & crime, and dystopian fiction.

The result has been publications at the highest level of the industry, with books sold to top publishers, including Penguin, Putnam, Crown, and Little, Brown, as well as to notable university and academic presses.

In addition to expert developmental editing and mindful book coaching, my services include:

- Editorial assessment

- Structural editing

- Actionable feedback

- Line and copy editing

- Concept and story building

- Character and scene-work refinement

- Query letter development and refinement

- Agent acquisition strategies

All of these services are aimed at taking your manuscript to the next level--at any stage of the book-drafting process--and making your story shine.

My approach to this work is an extension of my life philosophy: I engage all writers with honesty and empathy, always encouraging what the work aspires to be, always tailoring my feedback to the writer's expressed needs, always thoughtful and always thorough.

So whether your project is ready for a top-tier editorial eye, or you're simply stuck mid-draft and need seasoned guidance, let me help your story reach the destination it deserves.

Jules did an outstanding job of communication throughout the process. When I received the finished edit the level of detail was incredible and super helpful. I HIGHLY recommend Jules!

Working with Jules was a great experience. If you are a newbie, and even if English is not your mother tongue, he shows patience and understanding . I felt really accompanied on this difficult road. Writing a query is not something easy, if you are not familiar with the process. Today I feel I can manage on my own. Plus I know there is somebody I can rely on if I have other issues. Thanks again.

With his own course work and mentoring Jules got me back on track. I now have a clear path to finishing my novel.

Jules is the writing mentor that I needed. I met with several great writing coaches, all with different styles. Some were more similar to me in their approach to writing, but I knew Jules would be the coach to help me get some real work done! He provides a framework for storytelling that helped me understand story and scene structure better than ever before. It meant going back to the drawing b...

Jules is clearly an experienced, knowledgeable professional in the area of fiction editing. He provided me with a detailed "development edit" of the first half of my (way too long) manuscript of a debut novel in two approaches: (1) an 11-page summary of his thoughts that provided excellent guidance, articulating 16 principles for addressing a major edit/rewrite of my draft; and (2) annotations...
