Jules Elmore

Jules Elmore – Editor

Seasoned story coach, developmental editor, fiction expert - 20 years experience. A passion for gripping stories. A mission to empower you.

Overview

I am the author of THE AMATEUR AMERICAN (Crown) and a former creative writing instructor (New York University, Tulane University) with nearly ten years of teaching experience and over a decade of professional editing experience.

As an actively publishing novelist, I bring a storyteller's mindset to my editorial and coaching projects. These have ranged from literary fiction, to commercial mysteries and thrillers, to creative nonfiction and memoir--though I specialize in psychological suspense, crime, and dystopian fiction.

The result has been publications at the highest level of the industry, with books sold to top publishers, including Penguin, Putnam, Crown, and Little, Brown, as well as to notable university and academic presses.

In addition to expert developmental editing and mindful book coaching, my services include:

- Editorial assessment

- Structural editing

- Actionable feedback

- Line and copy editing

- Concept and story building

- Character and scene-work refinement

- Query letter development and refinement

- Agent acquisition strategies

All of these services are aimed at taking your manuscript to the next level--at any stage of the book-drafting process--and making your story shine.

My approach to this work is an extension of my life philosophy: I engage all writers with honesty and empathy, always encouraging what the work aspires to be, always tailoring my feedback to the writer's expressed needs, always thoughtful and always thorough.

So whether your project is ready for a top-tier editorial eye, or you're simply stuck mid-draft and need seasoned guidance, let me help your story reach the destination it deserves.

It was great to work with Jules. I would highly recommend him to anyone look for insightful, actionable feedback on how to improve their manuscript. He covered everything from high level plot structure down to small nits and formatting items. His critique covered the problem areas I knew needed work, but he also was able to show me why sections I subconsciously felt were "off" weren't workin...

Working with Jules was my first experience with a Reedsy story development coach and I hadn't realized how much I needed one till now. Having help to organize my thoughts, from someone who's a published author, and affirmation for what I'm doing right, are great incentivizers! He seems to feel sincere enthusiasm for my story and is engaged with what I'm trying to accomplish and he asks probing ...

Jules is a great person to work with as someone new to writing. He introduced me to many big-picture ideas about story structure and scene work, while also spotting the little things I was missing. He makes sure his advice was both direct and easy to understand. He focuses on craft and quality. If you are new like myself, you will notice the difference in your work so long as you listen and try...

Jules is a great writing coach for beginners because he will shown you directly how to improve your writing with specific examples using your own documents rather than just sending notes separately. His bespoke toolkit documents are also helpful in guiding you.

Working with Jules and participating in his coaching program was an absolutely rewarding experience that significantly enhanced my writing skills. Through his guidance, I gained deep insights into storytelling, character development, and crafting a book that captivates readers. Jules consistently came to our sessions well-prepared, with plenty of enthusiasm, and made the process of writing a bo...
