Jules E.

Jules E. – Editor

Seasoned novel coach, DE pro (fiction & memoir), ghostwriter. 20 years exp. A passion for gripping stories. A mission to launch your dream.

Overview

I am the author of THE AMATEUR AMERICAN (Crown) and a former creative writing instructor (New York University, Tulane University) with nearly ten years of teaching experience and over a decade of professional editing experience.

As an actively publishing novelist, I bring a storyteller's mindset to my editorial and coaching projects. These have ranged from literary fiction, to commercial mysteries and thrillers, to creative nonfiction and memoir--though I specialize in psychological suspense, crime, and dystopian fiction.

The result has been publications at the highest level of the industry, with books sold to top publishers, including Penguin, Putnam, Crown, and Little, Brown, as well as to notable university and academic presses.

In addition to expert developmental editing and mindful book coaching, my services include:

- Editorial assessment

- Structural editing

- Actionable feedback

- Line and copy editing

- Concept and story building

- Character and scene-work refinement

- Query letter development and refinement

- Agent acquisition strategies

All of these services are aimed at taking your manuscript to the next level--at any stage of the book-drafting process--and making your story shine.

My approach to this work is an extension of my life philosophy: I engage all writers with honesty and empathy, always encouraging what the work aspires to be, always tailoring my feedback to the writer's expressed needs, always thoughtful and always thorough.

So whether your project is ready for a top-tier editorial eye, or you're simply stuck mid-draft and need seasoned guidance, let me help your story reach the destination it deserves.

Jules is the writing mentor that I needed. I met with several great writing coaches, all with different styles. Some were more similar to me in their approach to writing, but I knew Jules would be the coach to help me get some real work done! He provides a framework for storytelling that helped m...

I wish that my words were as eloquent as Jules' are because he deserves a review that has clients flocking to his proverbial door. I've just finished reading through his assessment and commentary on my (very rough) first draft and if I can dig deep enough to find the skill set to implement his su...

Jules is a very good teacher. I feel like I got a whole semester's worth of college-level writing instruction for the price of one editing package. The writing exercises he suggested are things I will probably use for the rest of my writing life. I presented Jules with a novel in th...

Jules gave me great tools for both character and plot development which helped me get out of simply reading and re-writing my work over and over. I felt I could come at it from a completely new perspective.

Can you share an example of how you guided a first-time indie author through the editing process?

Great question! I'll refer to the guidance I've given a few recent first-time indie authors. My super objective in guidance for first-time authors is to convey broad revision tools--the big picture of story construction--and to illuminate practical scene work techniques. On the macro level, I f...
