Overview
Hi, I'm Melissa, an art director and book designer based in East London. I started my career at Usborne, one of the largest and most successful independent children's book publishers in the UK. There I gained experience working on a huge variety of fiction and non-fiction titles, including some interactive books. As my next step, I became Art Director at Design Eye, one of the imprints of Quarto, another very large and successful UK publishing house, where I specialised in both interactive and straight books from baby to adult. Over my career I've had the opportunity to create some truly amazing books, shape an entire imprint from the ground up, and work with some incredibly talented contributors.
My passion is for bringing words to life! I love nothing more than designing exciting visuals for a blank page of text, bringing a new level of understanding to words through beautiful pictures. I love to spend time crafting eye-catching covers that will appeal to both adults (the purchasers!) and children (the readers!). My layouts seamlessly blend text and imagery to bring big ideas to life. I also love collaborating with other contributors - throughout my career I've worked with countless talented editors, authors, designers and illustrators, and I know that good design is just one small part of what goes into making a sucessful book.
My preferred style is bold, colourful and contemporary!
Whether it's a picture book or illustrated non-fiction, I can deliver exceptional design solutions that resonate with both children and adults. My design process is flexible and collaborative to ensure a positive outcome for all.
