Overview
I’m a freelance editor and former associate editor at Algonquin Books. Previously, I worked in as an assistant editor at Little, Brown and Company and editorial intern with Graywolf Press.
At Little, Brown and at Algonquin, I worked with and edited award-winning and bestselling authors, including Leslie Jamison, Mike Curato, Dean Spade, Tom Lin, Nathan Harris, David Sedaris, Luis Alberto Urrea, Jo Ann Beard, Daniel Mason, Tomas Moniz, and Jeremy Dauber.
Books that I’ve worked on have won the National Book Critics Circle Award and Carnegie Medal for Fiction, been longlisted for the Booker and National Book Awards, and recognized on lists like the New York Times 100 Notable Books.
My focus is voice-driven literary fiction that seeks to reveal something profound about the hearts of its characters. In particular, I gravitate to projects by writers exploring contemporary issues and social dynamics from new vantages. On the nonfiction side, I have significant experience editing narrative nonfiction across categories, from memoir, nature, and art criticism, to big idea books about any number of subjects.
As an editor, I like to get deep into the network of structure, character, and point of telling—the framework through which the reader accesses your ideas. With clear, consistent communication, my job is to ensure your project is the best version of itself, and that it lands with your intended audience in the most resonant way.
Testimonials from authors:
“Evan has been, by far, the most effective editor I’ve worked with in my writing career. From global issues such as structure, plot and theme to sentence level guidance around rhythm and flow, Evan offered dynamic and creative feedback. He was also able to provide the professional experience and the emotional support as I went through the process of selling the manuscript to publishing the book. Evan did it all: listened attentively to understand and support my vision of the project and engaged in critical conversations about my writing. My book is wildly better because of working with Evan.”
—Tomas Moniz, PEN/Faulkner Award finalist and author of Big Familia and All Friends Are Necessary
“From the largest, big-picture questions to the most granular details, nothing escapes his eye; and your work will be incomparably improved from having that eye on it. I know mine was. Writing these words in praise of Evan’s editing skills, my main sensation—which is the highest, most self-evident proof of the praise—is how much I wished Evan was working with me to make them better.”
—Jeremy Dauber, author of American Comics: a History and American Scary: a History of Horror from Salem to Stephen King and Beyond
“Evan is such a careful reader and listener, knowing where to press for changes and also how to listen and magnify the true meaning of what I intend to say. I love working with Evan. He made my book so much better, I can't imagine it without his efforts.”
—Dean Spade, author of the national bestseller, Love in a F*cked-Up World
