Dan Letchworth – Editor

Copy editor with 12 years' professional experience with Scholastic, Klutz, Penguin, and Hachette; 5-year copy chief of San Diego Magazine.

Overview

I'm a freelance copy editor, proofreader, developmental editor, fact checker, and writer with 12 years' professional experience. I've copy edited over 250 books for young readers for Scholastic, Penguin Random House, and Hachette Book Group; developed activity book projects for Klutz; and for nearly five years until COVID-19 closed our offices, I was the copy chief of San Diego Magazine, where I edited all editorial content and wrote two regular columns.
My high-profile young adult work includes proofreading on the first two books of the Hunger Games series, continuity editing on the library binding editions of all seven Harry Potter books, copy editing on the 2011 re-releases of Animorphs #1–8, copy editing on the American paperback editions of the Mortal Engines/Predator Cities quartet, and copy editing on over 30 modern and classic Goosebumps books.
In my spare time I've self-published a science fiction novel, a video-game-themed wilderness survival guide, and a collection of short stories. My favorite books to work on are genre and literary fiction, but I have experience across the board and am open to any project. Get in touch and let me know how I can help you!

Dan did a follow up proofreading for portions of the book after some final tweaks. He was very flexible in establishing his scope and provided the same high level of professionalism as his initial copy edit. During a copy edit, Dan does a superb job at tracking the details of the story and found inconsistencies, both literal and conceptual, that I might have missed even if I looked for them. His understanding of grammar is highly nuanced, and he explains the nuances clearly. As part of my request, I asked him to do any final line editing where needed. He understood the essence of some of the compl...
