The trees lining the borders of the property leaned in and hung over—thick and dense— forming a barrier against the outside world and light. One would feel trapped between the imposing and intimidating structure and the wall of towering trees. Dead leaves, piled up over countless autumns and winters, were raspy like old newspaper, dry and brittle.
