The librarian locked the sliding doors with a low click, an emphasis to the glare he was already giving from the other side of the glass. I rolled my eyes. It's his own damn fault for not flickering the lights fifteen minutes prior to closing. And for being too lazy to do the patrol like the other librarian usually does to start cajoling us out of our hiding spots so she can lock up right at midnight. Zipping my bag, maybe a tad aggressively, I swung it back around, letting it create a warm bubble against my back while the rest of me f...
The house is empty. Dark now that the sun has set. I could turn on a light. But they give me headaches. Instead I move aside the curtain, letting in the orangey glow from a nearby street lamp. The driveway is still empty. I hate it when Jason is gone. It makes me feel like when you cut an avocado in half. Exposed, browning and rotting, holding my arms out for my other half to be returned. The curtain slips through my fingers as I turn back to the living room. In the dark, I maneuver around the shadowy shapes towards ...

The couch groaned in commiseration as I flopped down. With a sigh, I rubbed my eyes, then began to take off my jewelry. It took minutes to carelessly unmake what had taken an hour and half to assemble, but it was sort of cathartic. I covered my eyes the moment I stepped beyond the castle doors. Still, fresh tears budded from the sun’s sudden brightness. It was as if Mother Nature was emphasizing the queen’s words. “I’ve found that if you smile, you can convince yourself, if only for a little while, that everything is fine. Eventually it will be.” But it didn’t feel fine. It didn’t feel right to smile. And it didn’t feel right for it to be this lovely out. That’s not how it works in stories. In tales the weather matches the story’s emotions. It is bright and...

I was vibrating with the conflicting urge to hurry and the need to not draw attention to myself. Turning sharply down an aisle, I forced a smile and nod at the other student who looked up as he was flipping through a text before putting the book back. I breathed a little more easily once I reached the end of the aisle. This section of the library had less of a footpath lately due to them updating the electrical system in the study rooms. But things evidently have been slow going, making it much darker along this stretch. I glanced ...
