Center your story around someone’s public image and private self colliding. BEHIND THE MASKThey said in the 1800s that the masks weren't needed anymore. They had cured it! The plague. It was all over. We had done it. We eradicated small pox. We killed typhoid fever. We ended at all. The pus, the boils. We lanced all of the big, eroded, slimy cysts and removed all the abscesses. We did it! Medical science has killed pestilence. Then, what were the masks for? The bird beaks, the potions, the gothic towers? What were those long nights for, the b...
I met an old friend and her cousin at my favorite summer spot in the Pocono Mountains. It was my summer home. Here I would go canoeing in the summer, run along the beach and meet strangers, and make close friends. It was during this summer I met someone who I dearly love, though perhaps not as romantic as the prompt asks for. I was (and am still) someone who believes in staying close to friends from my time. And the person in question was the cousin of a friend. My friend’s name was Christine, and her cousin’s name was Amelia. I, of course, ...
“It’s a tide pod.” “No, it’s a forbidden snack.” The internet, how wonderfully open, lets you post and see whatever content you’re looking for. One of these types of content appeal to the neurodivgervent, a group of people who have mental illness, view themselves as people with different desires than neurotypical people and like to post stuff about eating a laundry detergent, tide pods. This is an old meme, but the forbidden snack is a wildly popular story to this day… *starts to play Lift Off, a popular song with synth piano, a drum track, ...
“To be, or not to be, that is the question:/Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer/The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,/Or to take arms against a sea of troubles/And by opposing end them. To die—to sleep,/No more; and by a sleep to say we end/The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks/That flesh is heir to: 'tis a consummation/Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;/To sleep, perchance to dream—ay, there's the rub:/For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,/When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,/Must give...
Night shifts, night shifts. I asked my dad (who works night shifts often) for a story over dinner. He’s an emergency room doctor, and I pretty much recorded everything he told me. It’s mostly him talking with me interrupting somewhat. I think I’ll just solo it to his story next time, but this is the version with the interruptions. Ok so this is going back twenty five years plus. So I’m newly, new doctor, uh, working single coverage at night, I’m I’m working at a hospital from Brookdale trauma center it’s in the heart of the worst areas in Br...

This one is about me! My parents brought my brothers and I to a fun play house one weekend, and I took the elevator upstairs. People were already in the elevator and more piled in after me. The doors closed, and the elevator began whirring, only to slow down before we made it to the next floor. The lights dimmed from a bright florescent to a yellowed color, but I could still see everyone’s faces. There were ten or twelve people within the elevator, but it wasn’t a big one, so it was difficult to rotate left or right or walk.Someone called 91...
