Vases filled with flowers graced the center of each table in the great hall. The view of the bright green stems were distorted through the faceted glass. A few delicate petals, looking like colorful teardrops, dotted the glossy surface of the table where the maid was setting the last of the dinner plates. As she picked up the fallen petals, I wondered how I was going to get through the evening. I nodded to the maid as she waited silently for approval. She left the room to help the cook finish the selected meal. Roast beef, glazed carrots...

As I wandered the halls of the basement, trying to find an empty shelf to store old dictionaries, I sneezed again. Stirring up even more dust bunnies in the musty, stale air. I never realized how many books had been relegated to storage due to the creations of e-books. After a small eternity, I found a shelf and slid the heavy box next to a collection of cookbooks. Another type of written word forgotten about because of the internet. Yes, the internet has made things easier in a great many ways, but it was also kinda sad to see rows and ro...

The hospital waiting room. Quite possibly the most boring room on the planet. They are all pretty much the same, no matter where you go. A variety of well thumbed through magazines, a few books and the usual half empty box of generic facial tissues. Rather uninspired artwork on the beige toned walls, worn out seating and an end table covered with medical information pamphlets. The large plant in the corner by the door is plastic. The muted TV bolted to the wall is playing drug advertisements on repeat. The stale air is not being circulated...

“Thank you so much for your donations Mrs. Davis! Have a good evening!” I waved at the smiling woman as she climbed into her minivan. Her twin six year old boys were inside happily munching on fruit snacks, secure in their car-seats.I took the first two of the five totes down to the sorting table in the basement. Two more trips to bring the rest of the totes down and placed on a bench to await their turn. Another trip upstairs to turn off the outside light and make sure the doors were locked. The community clothing drive was going better than...

The Dreaming TreeIt was finally my turn! I felt overwhelmed by all the choices. My heart was racing. I only had 2 hours left to decide. In my small secluded village, set deep in the forest along the Appalachian Trail there was a magical tree, The Dreaming Tree. The tree was a towering giant that had beautiful white flowers year round that fell into a graceful carpet all around it. Birds built perfect nests in branches that never needed trimmed. Each year ten fruits grew on the lowest branch. The fruits were for th...
