Weekly Contest #333
“ Be Careful What You Hunger For” Hunger, what a subjective word. I used to think it was only for food but then I grew up. There was never enough food when I was a kid. You’ve heard that story a million times, I’m sure. Poor kid, parents were losers, Mom an alcoholic and Dad was on any drug he could get his hands on. If they grew up in a big city in a bad neighborhood you wouldn’t think twice about it, I grew up on a farm in Nebraska. You’re probably thinking I just made this up but honest it’s the truth. I was one of four boys you can ask ...
Weekly Contest #332
HURRICANE IVAN We had been sailing for almost four or five months trying to position ourselves out of the path of any hurricanes. Our trip along the eastern US coast had been filled with surprises but then it was the first time I had seriously sailed being a farmers daughter. The closest I came to sailing was in an inner tube in our cow pond. My husband however was from Denmark and there was no doubting that Viking blood ran through his veins. He was never happier than when he was sailing. We had been married only four years, give or take a...

“DOG DAYS OF SUMMER” “It’s a hot one.” Purred Louise as she stretched her beautiful Persian body over the back of the sofa. “These are the days I wished I could shave this fur completely off.” “Should have been born a dog,” chuckled Fredo, as he lay on his back in the noonday sun. He had just come from the groomer and been shaved for the summer. “I want to get tanned all over this summer. The girls love Burmese mountain dogs with an all over tan, especially this time of year when we celebrate the Dog Days of Summer. Louise jumped off the co...

Prompt: One character is an artificial intelligence, the other is a human being. Your reader must struggle to tell which is which. “CAN THIS BE REAL” Characters A1 and A2 A1: “I am sorry sir but we do not have a choice. Given the information that has been downloaded on your history the only recycling options open to you are in the maintenance department somewhere in Mississippi or on latrine duty on a Danish submarine.” A2: “You have to be kidding. Do you realize what my position was ? I was the top dog in a very powerful country on this Pl...

“I regret’’ byCAROLYN WASIK “The Friend I Never Let Go” A Story of Unlikely Bonds and Lifelong Eccentricity I can make excuses all day long, but the reality is that I let her down. I let her down at the most crucial moment of her life. She was dying. We had known each other since our college years. We lived across the dormitory hall from each other. I did not like my roommates and she didn’t like hers, so we gravitated to each other. I was a country bumkin from Upstate New York and she lived on the outskirts of Boston, very different worlds...
Weekly Contest #289
He called in one of his manic states. This was not unusual, and I sat back in a comfortable chair and prepared to listen for probably the hundredth time. Mind you this was years of these phone calls and the only difference is on my part. I am no longer shocked or afraid of what he might do. I'm just sorry his life turned out this way, a constant roller coaster of emotions. The booze didn't help nor did stopping his antipsychotic medication. This episode I blamed on Christmas. I mean don't you always have to blame someone or something for you...
Weekly Contest #288
It was mid September and the leaves were just turning colors. This was my most favorite time of year I quess partly because that was my birthday month. It was also a time when the farm finally started giving up everything we had worked on over the summer. The garden was bursting with big juicy tomatoes and pumpkins, and a multitude of vegetables. It was a time to prepare for winter. My Mom would can the vegetables in Mason jars and prepare for the long cold winter to come. We lived on a farm in Western New York where the weather could be brut...
Weekly Contest #285
I REMEMBER….. Sitting at the kitchen table our long sullen faces staring at the bowl of oatmeal. My older brother and sister and I were not talking, we just stared at the bowl. Oatmeal that was not as I know it now, full of enriched grain , dried fruits, honey and almond milk. No this was just plain lumpy oatmeal. Mom felt as long as it was hot that was all that mattered on a cold morning in western New york. We had a snowstorm last night and for sure we would be walking to school in a couple of feet of snow. School was about a half mile fr...
