Overview
Are you looking for a mentor/editor who understands the publishing industry from multiple perspectives? Whether I'm editing books or writing them (Faber), reporting as a TV journalist (ITV News) or teaching Creative Writing (University of Cambridge), it all comes down to the same thing: how to TELL and SELL a great story.
I’ll use that experience to help you achieve your writing goals.
We’ll work together to remove the obstacles between you and your readers. We’ll consider the writer as well as the words; the process as well as the page. As an author myself, I understand the practical and psychological challenges of completing a project. We’ll collaborate to push your craft to the next level - helping you find your own distinct voice, design your structure and hone confidence and clarity.
Mentoring/editing a diverse range of writers, of various nationalities, for more than five years, I've worked with many genres of fiction and non-fiction.
One of my mentees, Kate Emelie, recently sold her first novel, Seven Dishes to Fall in Love With, after a four-way publisher auction.
In my own publishing career, I've so far had two novels published (Faber & Faber). My debut, The Rapture, was a Sunday Times Book of the Year and was shortlisted for the London Magazine Prize for an outstanding literary debut.
After providing an editorial assessment or developmental edit, I like to meet with clients via video call to discuss the issues, ask/answer questions and brainstorm solutions.
Available for regular meetings or occasional troubleshooting; reports on full manuscripts or agent submission packages. Get in touch to let me know how I might support you.

"She led me in new directions and gave me incredible advice that I believe has molded me into an immensely better writer, pushing me to consider points of view that I would have never been able to see on my own." - Olivia L
“It got to the stage that just knowing Claire was there, would be enough to keep the writing developing. She helped me find the writer within who can stand up to the ego that criticised every sentence I typed.” - Dee Adshead
"Feedback was always expertly balanced between genuine encouragement, and clear suggestions about what I might need to change. She helped me structure the book and dig deep into my own feelings about the people and events I was writing about." - Jennifer King
