Chelsea Beam

Chelsea Beam – Editor

I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, romance, and Black/African American lived experiences. I am also a master of humor and dialogue.

Overview

Hello, and thanks for checking me out! My name is Chelsea (she/her), and I’d love to work with you.

Prior to joining Reedsy, I ran my own editing business while also working as an editorial intern at The Bent Agency. I have a BA in English from Stanford University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Kingston University (in London, England), meaning that I know how to make words work!

When I edit, I never want to trample over the heart of your vision, which means that I will always offer suggestions and my rationale about potential changes—but you always get the final say. I do my best to ask questions when I’m confused and notate the places where I laugh out loud or get teary. Do be aware that I will spend more time on things that didn’t work for me rather than positive things.

Genre-wise, I love fantasy, science fiction, romance, and all things young adult, but I’d love to dip my toe into other arenas as well! Also, if you're writing outside of your own culture/experience and are looking for an African American sensitivity reader, I'm your gal. I'll review your manuscript for internalized bias and negatively charged language. I'm here to help you be as inoffensive as possible (but keep in mind that I can only do my best and speak from my own experiences).

When I’m not editing, I’m writing my own books, watching anime, or playing video games (Genshin Impact, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Final Fantasy XIV are my current loves), and I spend many of my evenings listening to actual-play Dungeons and Dragons podcasts. This means that if your book is nerdy, I am your person.

Reach out today, and let's get to work*!

*I do request that you've—at least—run a spell and grammar check on your document, please! Speaking of, I don't use or condone AI (outside of Microsoft Word's/Grammarly's spelling and grammar checks and speech-to-text when transcribing notes/comments)!

Dear Chelsea, thank you! I've just gone through your proofreading edits. My manuscript was large (an epic fantasy), and Chelsea helped polish it. I will take my time to carefully implement your edits. She has enhanced my manuscript profoundly. I would love a chance to work with you again for my n...

Chelsea was great to work with she provided a very comprehensive letter and edits within the book. She was able to help me add the holes in my writing that are necessary for an adult romantasy, but I had missed due to it being a new to me genre. Would definitely recommend. She was also very prom...

Chelsea is a delight to work with! She has a brilliant eye for detail and a warm and friendly communication style. She does not try to change an author's style, but instead offers suggestions that enhance the text. I cannot recommend her enough!

Choose Chelsea right now! We appreciated that we didn't lose the story or our voices like some editors try and do. She was open to dialog, she was open to feedback, she was a partner.

DeAundra is an absolute delight, and what she's doing with her son's stories is beyond admirable. I hope to be able to work with her in the future, and I can't wait to see where her projects go!

What's your number one tip for authors dealing with burnout or writer’s block?

Refill your creative well! Go watch TV, listen to your favorite songs, play a video game—do whatever you need to do to separate yourself from the book, even if only for a little bit. I've found that a small bit of distance can go a long way towards combating burnout/writer's block. However, if ...

Is it appropriate to follow up on a query letter, and how long should an author wait before doing so?

It depends on the agent. Many of them will post their specific guidelines on their websites—some will say that you can follow up in <x> weeks, and others will say that, if you haven't heard back from them in <x> weeks, to consider it a pass. If such information isn't on their website, it's a bit ...

How explicit (or "spicy") can and should the romantic or sexual content be in a self-published romance novel?

I think as much or as little as the author wants. My only caveat to that is to caution the author to put ample notice about the spice level so that a potential reader isn't surprised (and/or embarrassed by what they've stumbled upon)!
