Carolyn Bond

Carolyn Bond – Editor

Nonfiction developmental editor for 25 years, mainly in self-help, memoir-plus, business, psychology, and history.

Overview

I began my freelance editing career copyediting for publishers like Quest Books, University of California Press, and HarperSanFrancisco. However, I quickly found my niche as a developmental editor. While I have done developmental projects for Quest, UCPress, and Beyond Words/Atria (Simon & Schuster), most often I work directly with authors.

I provide editorial assessments both as a stand-alone service and as the first step in every developmental editing project. For authors seeking to place their books with traditional or hybrid publishers I offer book proposal writing/editing services.

The editorial assessment is comprehensive and has two parts. One is a high-level assessment of the writing, looking primarily at content, structure, and style/voice. The other is a solid look at the book concept, which includes but is not limited to: the author's goals, who the readers are and what they are seeking, the book's core message, comparable books, and best publishing pathways. Making sure these parameters work together is key to determining the direction of the book's development. And comparing the book concept with the manuscript assessment illuminates whatever gap exists between the book the author wants to write and the state of the current manuscript draft.

The editorial assessment is organized around 3 meetings, typically scheduled within a month, during which time I provide the manuscript assessment and book concept in writing. The third meeting is usually a rich discussion that clarifies the next best steps for both book and author. If the author and I move forward into a developmental edit, that discussion helps me do my best work to support that progress.

As a seasoned editor, I offer idea-organizing and word-crafting expertise on every book project, as well as an uncanny ability to bring what the author really wants to say onto the page in the author's voice. I am passionate about helping changemakers write books that change minds. I look forward to helping you create that book.

WHAT CLIENTS HAVE SAID

"Never have I worked with a more committed, brilliant, and tireless editor--AND I've worked with New York's top editors. And she is a delightful person to work with.... Carolyn, I could never have done this without you."

- Patricia Aberdeen (author of best-seller **Megatrends 2010**), **Conscious Money**

"Carolyn holds the writer and the text in a space of respect and care, then proceeds with the author in relentless pursuit of what the author is most deeply trying to say. The result is a book the author meant to write that provides a clear and enjoyable experience for the reader."

- Bill Grace, **Sharing the Rock**

"Carolyn is probably the best editor I've worked with (including Jackie Onassis) in terms of saving the meaning and the language as well."

- Stephen Larsen, **The Fundamentalist Mind**
