Overview

I'm a novelist (three books with HarperCollins; the first, Mysterious Skin, was made into a 2005 film); besides writing, I also work as a freelance editor, copyeditor, and proofreader (I am currently freelancing for Kensington; in the past, I worked with Simon & Schuster, Crown, and others). I have edited novels and story collections, specializing in literary fiction, LGBTQ fiction, and occasional mysteries / true crime. Currently, I am offering my copyediting / proofreading services and occasional help with fiction editing.

Freelance work (both copyediting and proofreading) on several original works of fiction.

Freelance proofreader

Self-employed
July, 1994 – September, 2015 (about 21 years)

For many years, I worked as a freelance proofreader for Simon & Schuster / Pocket Books. (When I relocated from New York to Boston, however, I wasn't able to obtain as much freelance work, unfortunately!)

Scott Heim's attention to detail astounds me. I'd been over and over my manuscript, but missed errors that Scott caught and corrected. I appreciate his professionalism and communication, and the way he improved the novel by adding comments and questions. He's a joy to work with. I'll definitely hire him again in the future!
