Mira Kennedy – Editor

Proofreader and copyeditor with over six years of wide-ranging experience and a special focus on children's and YA!

Overview

If you're looking for a quick, yet thorough and thoughtful proofreader, you've come to the right person. I have been proofreading and copyediting in some capacity since 2016 (and catching sneaky errors in my leisure reading for much longer).

Some of my earliest professional experience involved proofreading highly technical and/or academic text, and though I often found the work I was reading to be boring, that actually proved to be the most valuable training I could have gotten—it forced me to focus on the minutiae rather than getting swept up in the story. I also got a lot of exposure to citation styles and to the Chicago Manual of Style, a skill I maintained as I moved into full-time publishing work.

I spent almost six years at Charlesbridge, a children's publisher, and spent four of those years proofreading every book that went out to print up until the end of my time there in June, 2025. Because of this, I consider my specialty to be children's fiction and nonfiction. But I'm happy to work on a variety of genres and always leave room in my queries for genre conventions!

Work experience

Charlesbridge Publishing

Aug, 2019 — Jun, 2025 (almost 6 years)
During my six years in the production department at Charlesbridge, I worked closely with editorial, design, marketing, and outside vendors; the scope of my job let me in on the behind-the-scenes of publishing from all different angles. Starting in early 2021, I proofread all Charlesbridge's books before they went out to print as part of my production responsibilities. I had training in proofreading and the Chicago Manual of Style from past internships and jobs, and my skills only grew during those four years!

How do I balance getting professional editing with keeping my own voice?

A good editor of any kind—developmental, copyeditor, etc.—is going to honor your voice and want to help you hone it. It's good to keep in mind that your editors are not trying to make your writing less unique, they're trying to guide it to be the best it can be. With that understanding in place, ...
