Mike Cañas – Designer

I create story-driven illustrations filled with expressive characters, personality, humor, and a strong sense of place. My work is especially suited to children’s books, middle-grade stories, adventure, fantasy, science fiction, and projects that need characters readers can immediately connect with.

I’ve worked professionally in illustration for more than a decade, including projects with Walter Foster Publishing and Barnes & Noble, as well as numerous independent authors through Reedsy. I’ve illustrated complete books, covers, interior artwork, character designs, and print-ready layouts.

For full book projects, I help develop a consistent visual language from beginning to end. That can include character exploration, thumbnails and composition, finished illustrations, cover artwork, and preparing images with the final page layout in mind.

My approach is collaborative but structured. We’ll establish the visual direction early, approve sketches before moving into finished artwork, and use clear milestones so you always know where the project stands.
