Hélène Hilton

Hélène Hilton – Editor

Children's book writer and editor with a decade of experience working in publishing, including for Penguin, Ladybird and DK books.

Overview

Hello, there! I'm a writer and editor of illustrated books for children of all ages, from babies to YA. I have been in children’s publishing for nearly a decade and previously worked as an early years and primary school teacher (the fun kind of teacher - not the boring kind!)

Having worked in-house at DK and Penguin Random House since 2015, I have been lucky enough to write and edit some truly incredible books. I take books from the first spark of an idea (sometimes mine, sometimes someone else's) all the way through development, writing, and copy editing. I've worked with incredible first-time authors and authors who have been writing longer than I've been alive. I love the process of creating a truly unique book and there's nothing quite like seeing your published book on the shelf in a bookshop or library.

Here are some of the types of project and topics I love the most:

- Picture books

- Illustrated non-fiction

- Animals, nature, and the environment

- History

- Travel

- Myths and legends

- Nerd culture

- Anything offbeat, odd, and quirky

- Books that make growing up interesting, exciting, or a little bit magical

Please get in touch if you would like to work together. I can't wait to see what you've been writing!

Work experience

Self-employed

Jul, 2024 — Present
After nearly a decade in-house, I have taken the plunge to freelancing. My work is so creative these days, and very varied – I love that I never know what is coming across my desk next. I've worked with everyone from private clients to Big 5 publishers, and everything from developmental editing of picture books to copy editing niche coffee table books and quirky travel guides.

DK

Jan, 2023 — Jul, 2024 (over 1 year)
Back at DK, where I first cut my publishing teeth (that's an odd metaphor), I now had more responsibility in overseeing series and larger projects. I still got to write, edit, and create as part of the team, but I also had more project-management responsibilities. My favourite projects while I was there was the Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Everything, a fact-packed photographic encyclopedia for children, celebrating 35 years of the famous Eyewitness series and 50 years of DK.

Penguin Random House

Oct, 2019 — Jan, 2023 (about 3 years)
Working at the Ladybird imprint of Penguin Random House, I had the privilege to contribute to household series such as Read it Yourself, as well as author-led books. I also created my own little Ladybird IP characters, Ladybird Class, developed with a focus on inclusive representation.

DK

Oct, 2015 — Oct, 2019 (almost 4 years)
I started at DK in my first publishing job as an Editorial Assistant, then made Editor before long. I was quickly entrusted with managing my own books, from pitching ideas to the managing creative team, to writing, editing, and proofing, all the way through to publication. My favourite book from this time is Through the Animal Kingdom, a beautifully illustrated and photographic narrative non-fiction gift book, which follows the footsteps of animals through their habitats.

Hélène helped me structure my work more clearly. She provided detailed comments and clear suggestions for improvement. Her comments helped me refine my work. She was quick to respond and happy to help. She completed my work ahead of the deadline, despite the short notice.
