Greg Cox

Greg Cox – Editor

Greg has worked as an editor for Tor Books and William Morrow. He specializes in science fiction, fantasy, and horror.

Overview

I've been a professional science fiction, fantasy, and horror editor for more than thirty years, working with such celebrated authors as Jonathan Maberry, Seanan McGuire, Richard Matheson, Harry Harrison, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Graham Joyce, Rosemary Edghill, and others, as well as any number of new and beginning authors. I've worked both full-time and as a consultant for Tor Books, and enjoy working with authors on a developmental level to help their manuscripts achieve their full potential, making the best parts better while also pointing out any issues that need to be addressed in the most encouraging way possible. As a lifelong fan of all things weird and fantastic, I like nothing better than to dive deep into intriguing new realms of the imagination in order to help authors fully realize their creative visions.

I'm also a New York Times bestselling writer, and I like to think that working both sides of the desk makes me a better editor since I know what it's like to have my own work edited with care.

Work experience

Tor Books

Jan, 1998 — Present

After working full-time at Tor Books for many years, I elected to become a Consulting Editor because my writing career was taking off in a big way. As a Consultant, I continue to acquire and edit special projects for Tor, while also doing the freelance editing I enjoy for other authors and publishers.

Tor Books

Jun, 1990 — Jan, 1998 (over 7 years)

As a full-time science fiction, fantasy, and horror editor, I worked with such noted authors as Jonathan Maberry, Seanan McGuire, Richard Matheson, Poul Anderson, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and others, as well as acquiring and editing media-tie books based on such popular series as Mortal Kombat, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Farscape.

Arbor House/William Morrow

May, 1987 — Jun, 1990 (about 3 years)

Working as an assistant editor at Arbor House was a great education in commercial publishing.

Greg was top notch. Lots of great feedback on clarity and flow, helping me strengthen my characters, sort out unevenness in my plot, and had great tips on language. The full package. Super reliable and detail oriented. If you want someone to take your project seriously and really understand what you're trying to do, you can't go wrong with Greg. He was a superb partner.

Greg's insights and thoughtful comments were much appreciated. He brings a great deal of value and experience to a collaboration. In particular, I found Greg's detailed written reviews of the manuscript very useful while rewriting. I learned a lot collaborating with Greg and would recommend him to others.

Greg was fantastic to work with. Exceptional response time, great feedback, really understood what I was looking for with the edits and gave some extra consideration to workshopping a title for the piece. Even got to work well ahead of time when some free space opened up in his schedule, which was greatly appreciated. Overall phenomenal experience, highly recommend.

Greg really saved my bacon! He was able to swoop in and help with last minute edits for my manuscript when other arrangements fell through. He was so professional and flexible, and has a huge wealth of experience. Highly recommend.
