I specialise in providing developmental editing services for fantasy, science fiction, young adult, and mystery novels. I am also comfortable working in both British and American English.
As an English Literature graduate and award-nominated writer, there's nothing I love more than analysing a novel for its characters, worldbuilding, pacing, and other "big picture" elements.
I work with writers at all stages of their careers, but especially love working with new writers and young authors, as well as folks who've been writing for a while and are looking to break into bigger markets.
Whether you're planning to self-publish, looking for a small indie publisher, or planning to go down the traditional route of finding an agent, I can use my 20+ years of experience in the publishing and speculative fiction communities to give your story the best possible chance of success.
Having been on the receiving end of confidence-destroying "critiques" several times over my career (from writers who, in hindsight, were more interested in their own self-importance than in helping me to grow), I pride myself on building writers up rather than tearing them down. No matter how long you have been writing, there will always be some elements of storytelling that come more naturally and uniquely to you. I can help you to identify these strengths, draw confidence from them, and develop them into something that will have your readers coming back to your stories time and again.
At the same time, I can help you to recognise any weaknesses in your manuscript and provide suggestions on how they may be improved. But that process will never be about imposing my ideas on your story, or by robbing it of what makes it special to you. Instead, I use my extensive experience of storytelling and narrative structure to build on the characters, plotlines, and other elements that are already present in your story, help you to develop them and, in doing so, use them to address and overcome any problems. That way, no matter how many changes you make as a result of my feedback, you will still feel as though your novel is undeniably your story--full of all the strange, wonderful, and glorious things that make you completely unique.
I offer a range of services to suit your budget, and always include at least an hour of follow-up discussion (by telephone, video chat, email, or whatever your preference) to discuss the feedback I've provided and help you to implement any changes you decide to make as a result.
So, whether you're a new writer who's just finished their first novel and is looking for feedback from an experienced professional, or have several novels under your belt and are looking to up your game, I'd love to hear from you.
Together, we can develop fascinating characters, captivating worlds, and compelling plotlines, and help your stories to become the strongest possible versions of themselves.
I'm always happy to chat and answer questions, so drop me a line today to find out more.
(Please note - while there are a lot of light novels and manga in my portfolio, this is not a full reflection of the genres I work with--it's simply down to Reedsy's requirements over what I can include. In fact, while I do work on these sorts of projects, most of my editing these days is in fantasy, young adult, and science fiction novels. If you're curious about the quality of my work in these areas, please take a look at my reviews, and feel free to contact me with any questions!)
