Kelly Carter – Designer

I’m an award-winning graphic designer and art director with more than 20 years of experience creating publications that combine strong concepts, compelling imagery, thoughtful typography, and meticulous attention to detail.

Before focusing on book design, I spent over two decades as a magazine creative director, art-directing photography and guiding publications from initial concept through final production. That experience taught me how to create designs that not only look beautiful, but also communicate clearly and connect with an audience.

Today, I work directly with authors to create covers and interiors that capture the character of their books while meeting the expectations of their genre and readership. I love how good design can bring a writer’s vision fully to life and make a book more engaging for readers. Fantasy, thrillers, historical fiction, memoir, and nonfiction are particular favorites, especially projects that offer opportunities for distinctive visual storytelling.

My work can include cover design and illustration, interior design and typesetting, typography, image searches, and complex layouts incorporating photographs, maps, diagrams, or other visual elements.

Collaboration is an important part of my process. I listen carefully to what an author is trying to accomplish, develop concepts that support that vision, and refine the design until the finished book feels intentional, polished, and uniquely its own.
