I’m Sarah Newton-John, a native English speaker from Australia living in Spain and working full-time as a copy editor, proofreader and sometimes writer. My cat is on my lap much of the time. I love what I do!
I hold a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Literature from the University of Sydney and a Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship from the University of New South Wales. I passed the examination at the Proofreading Academy in 2019 for my continuing professional development.
I live in rural northwest Spain, Galicia, with my partner, two dogs, three hens, and the aforementioned cat.
These are the services I offer your manuscript:
- Copy editing to creatively rework the text in each phrase and sentence to improve natural English flow and readability, enhancing impact and clarity. I will accentuate your unique voice. I will give added shape to your text to bring out the distinct flavour of your writing, offering suggestions and asking questions as an educated and engaged reader. I sustain open-minded concentration on your pages until I am satisfied your book is immeasurably improved by my revisions, suggestions and comments.
- Proofreading for errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax, lexical choice, repetition and consistency etc.
I have worked in the publishing and medical sectors for most of my 30-year career including:
- Working for almost 15 years as a freelance proofreader of medical and allied health textbooks with the global science publisher, Elsevier.
- Copy editing and proofreading the peer-reviewed journal Pathology for a former employer, the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2020 and currently in 2021–2022
Researching and writing: 25 Years: A History of the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, a former employer.
- Copy editing and proofreading in a range of genres and media: e-books, blogs, academic articles, website content, white papers, memoirs, social media posts and short story collections since launching freelance full time in March 2020.
- Copy editing and proofreading books – both fiction and non-fiction.
My career began with marketing academic books, and eventually settled into specialized medical administration, (Woolcock Institute of Medical Research; Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia; Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand). I contributed to a number of high quality editorial projects. I was also the resident proofreader wherever I worked when managers and colleagues learned of my freelance activity!
I receive consistent five-star reviews since starting work last year on freelancing platforms Upwork and Reedsy: “Sarah has been fantastic to work with, she gave me real peace of mind…” ; "Very happy, excellent quality…” ; "Sarah works fast, and also provides a great quality of work. She is very reliable. She also provided great feedback on my two books as a proofreader. I would recommend Sarah to anyone needing a copyeditor and a proofreader for a book...".
My aim is for you to glow with satisfaction too on the editorial work provided to your manuscript. As a relatively new full time freelancer (I am humbled by the caliber of fellow editors here on Reedsy... I belong here too! Wow!) I offer you an adventurous, fresh attitude and a sincere wish to gain as much good and also challenging experience as I can in my journey of words. Every book is different and special in its own ways.
I started writing (May 2021) a brief and (hopefully) amusing monthly newsletter for subscribers in my network to read about freelance editorial and community life for a middle-aged Aussie chica in Spain—good way to keep in touch with friends, practice my writing skills and also to see things from the writer's perspective for a change.
I will focus on providing you with a well-written, appealing, and error-free book. You will find I support your writing project with enthusiasm and skill.
I respond to messages pronto and will provide you with a creative, dedicated and responsible service!
I look forward to hearing from you.
With very best wishes,
