Marlena Teitge – Translator

German translator with 5 years of experience. Specialized in creative 'how-to' books, cook books and fiction. New book projects welcome!

Overview

I am a professional English to German literary translator with five years of experience. I found my niche in woman's literature and creative 'how-to' books as well as baking and cooking books. I love to try out what I translate, that's why I make hundreds of Origamis when I translate an Origami book ("Origami Black & White. Die Kunst des Faltens", Didier Boursin) or turn my bathroom into a lab for organic cosmetics when I translate a book about how to make your own cosmetics ("Bomben-Badespaß: Badebomben, Peelings und Masken", Isabel and Caroline Bercaw). The most fun I had, translating a 'how-to' book about building chain reaction machines at home! :) ("Ketten-Reaktionsmaschinen zum Selberbauen", Paul Long). I work mainly with German publishers, who appreciate my thorough, creative and quick work as well as my expertise. I communicate in a personal way and I always try to fulfill their wishes as good as I can. In my free time I love run, travel, learn a new language (currently Cezch) and crocheting, sewing and doing DIY projects.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2018 — Present
In 2018 I finally fulfilled my dream of being a fulltime freelance German translator and proofreader. Since then I am the proud owner of my own little translation business and love my job. I specialize in 'how-to' books about crafting, including crochet, knitting, sewing, origami or making natural cosmetics or jewelry, and cookbooks. Other fields of expertise are running, a healthy lifestyle, healthy food, yoga, and pets.

Apprise Software

Jun, 2015 — Jan, 2018 (over 2 years)
As an IT translator for German, I translate the complete software solution of Apprise (Aptean Company) and the corresponding help documents from English into German. I also translate the website, marketing brochures and customer case studies. In addition to translations, I am responsible for creating and maintaining the German terminology bank and internal translation guidelines. I also carry out regular product checks to ensure that my translations are customer-friendly and localized. I work on a daily basis with the CAT tools Déjà Vu and Trados SDL.

Masaryk University, Czech Republic

Sep, 2014 — May, 2015 (8 months)
As a language assistant of the DAAD I taught German to Czech students in the Bachelor's program. Class subjects were German grammar, translation techniques, conversation, and contemporary literature. I prepared the teaching materials myself, taught as an independent lecturer of the university, and administered exams at the end of the year.

Université d'Avignon, France

Sep, 2011 — Jul, 2013 (almost 2 years)
I taught the German language to French Modern Literature students in the Bachelor's and Master's program. Class subjects were German grammar, syntax, conversation, and contemporary literature. I prepared the teaching materials myself, taught as an independent lecturer of the university, and administered exams at the end of the year.
