Jo Kemp – Editor

A Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders (CIEP) with over 25 years’ experience in educational publishing

Overview

I work on a wide range of print and multimedia resources for students and teachers, across a variety of subjects. I have also worked on self-teaching titles, and have been the regular editor of two quarterly magazines. I have a particular interest in English language and literature (at primary and secondary level) and primary mathematics.

My role as an editor can include rewriting and developmental/structural editing, copyediting, proofreading and Alpha and Beta testing of digital products (I work on a Mac). I also have a wealth of experience in project management, so understand the broader publishing picture, but prefer now to focus on editorial work. Although I'm freelance, I love being part of a team and enjoy working with authors and in-house colleagues at the publishers I work with.

I have also worked as a mentor, training editors in both the UK and Kazakhstan.

Projects I have worked on in recent years include:
• Copyediting Oxford International Curriculum Maths Years 1–4 (Oxford University Press)
• Development editing Reimagine Key Stage 3 Shakespeare (HarperCollins)
• Development editing and copyediting Your Choice KS4 (PSHE) (HarperCollins)
• Copyediting and proofreading several titles in the Carribbean Contemporary Classics series (Hachette)
• Copyediting several titles in the Read and Respond series (Scholastic)
• Copyediting Years 1–6 MathsBeat teacher's resources (Oxford University Press)
• Copyediting GCSE English Literature and Language revision guides, practice tests and workbooks (York Notes)
• Development editing Year 6 of Collins International Primary English as a Second Language (HarperCollins)
• Project managing and development editing Cambridge Lower Secondary English teacher's guides (international market) (HarperCollins)

It is important to me to continue to develop my skills and learn more. Over the past few years I have completed an MA in creative writing at Newcastle University, the CIEP course 'Introduction to Fiction Editing', and Louise Harnaby's course 'Switching to Fiction' . Yes, I am hoping to broaden my portfolio to fiction editing in the near future!
