Kellie Hagan

Kellie Hagan – Editor

With experience in everything from computer manuals to historical dictionaries to literary fiction, I'm an equal-opportunity editor.

Overview

I'm a professional book editor with more than 30 years of experience. In my most recent job as a production editor for an academic book publisher, I not only managed all aspects of turning a manuscript into a book (copyediting, typesetting, proofreading, indexing, etc.), but I also guided and remained in contact with authors throughout the entire production process. My background is mostly in technical and academic publishing, but I also edit a literary journal twice a year, which has given me a great grounding in editing all types of fiction, including poetry, literary essays, and short stories. My primary concern when I edit is making sure what an author is saying will be understood by readers as intended. I'm not a frustrated writer (as are many editors); I've known this is what I wanted to do since I was in college and ended up editing all my friends' papers. Years ago, an author complimented me by saying I was a "subtle editor." That's always my goal, to help others communicate exactly what they want in their own voice.

Work experience

Rev.com

Apr, 2022 — Present
Work approximately 15-20 hours per week editing transcription drafts and transcribing audio and video text. You wouldn't think this would be editorial-related, but I assure you it is. It's a challenge to remove all the false starts and fillers people use when they speak in order to provide customers with clean, comprehensible transcripts.

The Little Patuxent Review

Nov, 2017 — Present
Copyediting all material included in the Little Patuxent Review, which is published twice a year.

Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group

Apr, 1999 — Apr, 2022 (about 23 years)
Produced 40 to 50 books a year, hiring freelancers and communicating directly with authors. Worked on mainly academic titles but also a number of general-interest and fiction books.

TAB Books / McGraw-Hill

Apr, 1989 — Feb, 1996 (almost 7 years)
Copyedited manuscripts and worked directly with authors on corrections to their page proofs.
