John Lynch

John Lynch – Ghostwriter

Ghost writer since 1989 of more than 60 books, with several climbing high in the charts, two made into movies and three optioned

Overview

You've got a story to tell and you need someone to tell it. I'm glad we've met - telling other people's stories in a way that people will want to read them is what I do.

My breakthrough year was 1989 when I sold my first book, my first article and my first short story . I signed my first ghost writing contract the following year. Since then I've ghost written more than 60 full length fiction and non-fiction books published with other people's names on the cover and 9 of my own. Some of those ghosted books have spent weeks in the Top 10 of Amazon charts and 5 have been optioned for movies/TV. I also write scripts for YouTube videos. Seven years in North America means I write American English as fluently as the British kind.

AI

AI has become prominent in discussions about writing, whether fiction or anything else, so I’m going to state here my policy on the use of AI tools in my work. I use AI when the writing is complete to test things like:

Have I left any brackets or speech marks unclosed?

Have I spelt the same name in different ways in different parts of the work?

Have I used a hyphenated word and also used the same word without a hyphen?

Have I capitalized a word in one place and use the same word uncapitalized in another?

Those are examples: there are a number of other checks that AI can carry out very efficiently. When I’m writing in American English, I also use AI to make sure that I am complying with the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

I do NOT use AI for any of the following:

To form or expand on plots and outlines.

To generate worldviews and/or characters.

To write the work I will be submitting to the client. Everything I write comes out of my own head and my own imagination. (And yours, of course: it's your book and I never forget that).

I’m aware that AI has a growing following, and if you are looking for someone to use AI in writing your book I wish you every success with your project, but I am probably not the ghostwriter you should be considering. On the other hand, if you’ve used AI in the preparation of your own outlines, your own worldviews and/or your own characters but understand that, if you employ me, I will not use AI to convert those inputs to a finished book, feel free to make contact.

I read books on Campbell's Hero Journey, Snowflake Method, books on show don't tell, how to write great dialogue, in addition to having already read Elements of Style and On Writing Well twice. Bottom line: It didn't matter. Writing is a craft that takes years of practice to produce something ex...

John doesn't mumble his words. He's one tough and honest man to work with, who combines his extensive knowledge with a sensitivity to detail and a razor sharp judgement. It was not always easy and it shouldn't be. Trust grew on the tree of a direct exchange of values and professionalism. I'd wo...

I'd never contemplated using a ghost writer. I felt sure I had a great book idea, but didn't have the first idea how to write it. I did an internet search on a whim one day and found Reedsy. I registered and based on my book idea and Reedsy's selection process, found John Lynch. John has been a p...

had a book I had to write but I know I am not a writer. My book was a historical novel about the Irish in the American civil war. I had done all the research, outlined the story, put together all the characters. I knew how I wanted this to go. It took the best part of a year. Now I needed a write...

How has publishing changed since you started your career?

My breakthrough year was 1989. That’s when I sold my first book to a publisher, my first article to a magazine (it was Good Housekeeping) and my first short story to BBC Radio 4’s Morning Story slot. (That broadcast is still on my website. My mother was proud that her son had a story on the BBC, ...

How do you build an understanding of your client’s voice and vision for their project?

I’ve said elsewhere that, before the author and I agree to collaborate, we first talk on Zoom because chemistry is vital in a ghost writing relationship: do the author and I get along well enough to bring this project to a successful conclusion? (A successful conclusion is one that produces a boo...

What methods do you use to capture a client’s voice in your writing?

I try never to forget the single most important rule in ghost writing: it isn’t my book. It’s the author’s. I can give advice. I can say, “We’ll do that if that’s what you want, but before we do I want to tell you what I see as the drawback to that approach. And then I will say what the drawbacks...
