EDITORIAL DIRECTOR + BOOK EDITOR + GHOSTWRITER + AUTHOR

I like to think of what I do as 'creative auditing' - unleashing the author's story with snappish and rigorous editorial observations, diction dieting, faultless research, and an acute eye for angling for the market - be that content or copy, the macro or the micro. I understand the commercial market, world of agents, and this informs my editing.

That said, the types of things I look to ensure a manuscript is brimming with are all the things the reader of that genre wants to read about. So, whether that be 'movie picture' scene transitions for thrillers; credible conflict between complex characters of lit-fiction; 'fleshy' subplots for that slow burning romance; or touchable, textured world-building in fantasy fiction and sci-fi -- I'll tailor it accordingly.

From starting out in London publishing houses, editing books that have been published and distributed by large publishers including Bloomsbury, I am now the Editorial Director of Arcadian Library imprint White Mountain Books. Alongside this, I am a ghostwriter of over fifteen published books, many of them novels, founder of a book packaging press, and advanced register professional with the Society of Editors and Proofreaders. Editing, however, is my main passion. I have experience across a range of publications: from the memoirs of notable bankers and oil men; to literary, YA, sci-fi, fantasy and historical fiction; to academic texts, as well as collections of poetry and children's stories.

I can also quote for a range of slimmed down packages: from polishing up prose, to a dialogue package focussing only on speech, to character clean-ups. If you decide that I might be the fellow to ensure you're doing that, what you'll also receive is a vibrant and dynamic working relationship, and a shared goal of reaching your endgame. All of my relationships with writers I have worked with in the past have been built on a lot of energy, no lack of humour, and a great slice of passion into whatever the project entails.

Editorial Director

Arcadian Library and White Mountain Books
August, 2016 – Present (about 2 years)

• Promoted to the position of Editorial Director after two years in previous position as Book Editor. Entrusted with the general running of Arcadian Lifestyle Publishing; this includes leading a team of writers, editors, proofreaders and more.
• Main duties comprise liaising - and maintaining good relations - with authors, editors, designers, proofreaders, printers, typesetters, marketers, legal advisors, and distributors to chart and navigate a book along the full publication spectrum: from manuscript through to international release.
• To ensure that strict deadlines set by our publishing partners and distributors Bloomsbury and Macmillan are met for delivery to distributing warehouse. This trickles down to every element of a book's creation. Because of this, it is my duty to set - and meet - tight deadlines to maintain annual publishing schedule.
• More specific roles include the following: book editing; formatting for typesetters; contributing to, and signing off on, book cover design; scheduling administration; drafting marketing components for books such as blurbs, dedications, summaries, and introductions.

Soul Guide

Amelio Nazarko

Soul Guide is a reflective consolidation that sets in motion a journey of self-love, told in pairs of poems that parallel each other. It shadows misadventure, chronicles the bittersweet effects of love in different forms, and offers solidarity within oneself. Soul Guide is a perceptive narrative about loss, wandering, and eventually reigniting your own soul.

Joey polished my manuscript to perfection and made my debut novel sing. His meticulous edits is a precise balance between the potent and the poetic. He contemplated over every line and each word and offered great developmental suggestions to give better shape to the novel. My characters pop from the page and the tempo of the story works better now because Joey applied extra care to the pivotal ...

Joey was a pleasure to work with and he takes his time to understand the project. He asks the right questions to further develop the story forward and to strengthen the material. He is easy to work with and flexible. He has a good insight and vision and I hope to continue on working with him throughout.

I’ve really enjoyed working with Joey so far. I had no idea what to expect out of this and he has given me great feedback on a story I’ve been writing for more than 10 years.

Joey took on a micro and a macro edit of a manuscript for me, and managed to deliver detailed, relevant yet concise reports for me to work with. His feedback has been invaluable and he absolutely understood what I was trying to get at, even at times when I was struggling to articulate it myself. His knowledge of the publishing world also added a necessary dimension to the edits. He was a ple...

I hired Joey to help me with a short story that I'd taken as far as I knew how to. It's a historical fiction with paranormal elements, you could say. This was the first time I worked with a professional editor, and I'm happy with the experience. Joey made a lot of good changes in the manuscript, things I wouldn't have thought of, and he took the time to explain his reasoning. We had some discus...
