Joey Quince

Joey Quince – Editor

London agent and editor. Your man for lit fiction, crime, fantasy, and all thriller fiction.

Overview

EDITORIAL DIRECTOR + BOOK EDITOR + GHOSTWRITER + AUTHORI like to think of what I do as 'creative auditing' - unleashing the author's story with snappish and rigorous editorial observations, diction dieting, faultless research, and an acute eye for angling for the market - be that content or copy, the macro or the micro. I understand the commercial market, world of agents, and this informs my editing. That said, the types of things I look to ensure a manuscript is brimming with are all the things the reader of that genre wants to read about. So, whether that be 'movie picture' scene transitions for thrillers; credible conflict between complex characters of lit-fiction; 'fleshy' subplots for that slow burning romance; or touchable, textured world-building in fantasy fiction and sci-fi -- I'll tailor it accordingly. From starting out in London publishing houses, editing books that have been published and distributed by large publishers including Bloomsbury and Penguin Random House, I am now the Editorial Director of Arcadian Library imprint White Mountain Books. Alongside this, I am a ghostwriter of over fifteen published books, many of them novels, founder of a book packaging press, and advanced register professional with the Society of Editors and Proofreaders. Editing, however, is my main passion. I have experience across a range of publications: from the memoirs of notable bankers and oil men; to literary, YA, sci-fi, fantasy and historical fiction; to academic texts, as well as collections of poetry and children's stories.I can also quote for a range of slimmed down packages: from polishing up prose, to a dialogue package focussing only on speech, to character clean-ups. If you decide that I might be the fellow to ensure you're doing that, what you'll also receive is a vibrant and dynamic working relationship, and a shared goal of reaching your endgame. All of my relationships with writers I have worked with in the past have been built on a lot of energy, no lack of humour, and a great slice of passion into whatever the project entails.

Arcadian Library and White Mountain Books

Aug, 2016 — Present
• Promoted to the position of Editorial Director after two years in previous position as Book Editor. Entrusted with the general running of Arcadian Lifestyle Publishing; this includes leading a team of writers, editors, proofreaders and more. • Main duties comprise liaising - and maintaining good relations - with authors, editors, designers, proofreaders, printers, typesetters, marketers, legal advisors, and distributors to chart and navigate a book along the full publication spectrum: from manuscript through to international release. • To ensure that strict deadlines set by our publishing partners and distributors Bloomsbury and Macmillan are met for delivery to distributing warehouse. This trickles down to every element of a book's creation. Because of this, it is my duty to set - and meet - tight deadlines to maintain annual publishing schedule. • More specific roles include the following: book editing; formatting for typesetters; contributing to, and signing off on, book cover design; scheduling administration; drafting marketing components for books such as blurbs, dedications, summaries, and introductions.

Joey really helped me to make my novel, The Faces of Ixchel, into a far better read. He didn't alter the basic plot, but edited and taught me an awful lot about world-building, overall tone, and how the genre of my book would generally go. It was a really detailed edit which I am very grateful f...

He told me in our first discussion that “The unique hallmarks of your world needs to permeate everything to float authentically and enticingly into the reader’s mind.” His attentio...
