Joe Gough

Joe Gough – Designer

Freelance Illustrator specializing in book covers and editorial illustrations.

Overview

Hi, I'm an illustrator originally from the UK, now living in NYC. Graduate of the Illustration as Visual Essay MFA at the School of Visual Arts, 2018.

My approach to creating visual concepts is driven by storytelling. Through using dynamic composition, dramatic lighting, considered color choices and attention to detail, I construct evocative and cinematic images that capture the mood of a piece of writing with a pulpy, vintage aesthetic. Through my editorial work, I am no stranger to tackling long-form fiction features and distilling stories down into a single image that teases the overarching narrative.

My past clients include The Atavist, Believer Magazine, Bloomsbury Publishing, The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, The Poetry Foundation, Texas Monthly, The Washington Post and many more.

I look forward to working with you on your next book project!

I specialize in humorous character focused covers, but my style naturally fits both horror and dramatic works too.
