Jennie Seitz

Jennie Seitz – Editor

Editor with 15+ years' experience in nonfiction, tech, mindset, and mystery fiction. Clients include Cambridge and a Big Five publisher.

Overview

I’m an editor and proofreader with over 15 years of experience working on nonfiction and fiction, including memoir, mysteries, and books with a social or reflective focus. I’ve worked on academic texts, ELT materials, and trade titles—everything from journal articles and textbooks to political nonfiction and personal stories.

I’ve worked with publishers including Cambridge and Oxford University Presses, as well as one of the Big Five. I enjoy supporting authors who have something real to say, as well as those who can craft a compelling mystery. I’ve studied positive psychology, hold a business mindset certification, and, before teaching English in Japan, I worked as a flight attendant, so I have a particular interest in books about people, change, and travel.

When we work together, you’ll receive your manuscript back with all the edits tracked so you can review every change. I’ll also include a style sheet that explains the choices I’ve made and why, based on your preferences. My aim is to make only necessary edits from the reader's perspective, meaning that I will flag anything that could be confusing to your reader or that brings them out of the story or narrative. The aim, however, is always to preserve your voice, so if anything is unclear, I'll raise a query so you can make the final decision.

I’m a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), where I sit on the Council. I’m also a member of several other editing associations, including the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), ACES: The Society for Editing, the Freelance Publishing Professionals (FPP), and the Professional Editors Network (PEN). I regularly take part in continuing professional development to keep my skills sharp.

Originally from the UK and now based in the US, I’m comfortable editing in both British and American English. I care about doing the work well, communicating clearly, and helping your book become what you want it to be.

Work experience

Self-employed

Sep, 2009 — Present
I began my editing career working with academic researchers, helping multilingual and English-speaking authors prepare journal articles and dissertations for publication. In more recent years, my work has expanded to include ELT textbooks and teaching materials for publishers such as Cambridge and Oxford University Press, as well as trade nonfiction, memoir, and fiction. This shift has allowed me to bring the same care and clarity to personal storytelling, message-driven nonfiction, and mysteries, with close attention to voice, flow, and the reader’s experience.

Various institutions and universities in Japan

Feb, 2007 — Jul, 2007 (5 months)
Before editing full time, I taught English in Japan. This experience gave me a strong foundation in language structure, cross-cultural communication, and learner-focused content—skills I still draw on when editing for authors from a wide range of backgrounds.
